Paging ***goldie***

Hi goldie -

Someone on the 0-3 board recommended I page you... just picked up our rx for Prevacid for our 3 week old infant... instructions say to give her 2.5ML twice a day, but don't say if it should be on an empty or full stomach... any tips on when we should give the medicine?

TIA big time!!

  • ....Butting in here....

Good idea to page Goldie. She is a wealth of info in regards to Prevacid. She has answered so many of my questions!

Good luck with the med. We are on the solutabs, and it has made a WORLD of difference! We tried Zantac and Axid....no luck. Prevacid has been great.

  • is it a liquid that you had compounded?  just asking b/c that dose doesn't make sense for approved methods of Prevacid- but the compound i'm assuming it would.

prevacid is not approved for a liquid compound- but many docs still do it that way... so i can't comment much about the compound...

but can tell you that trying to give approx 1/2 hour before eating is going to make it work the BEST - but don't stress too much about the timing - it will still work if it's closer to a bottle (or right before)... it's just designed for best results to be in the blood stream before you eat.

best of luck - i hope it works for your baby - reflux is so hard to deal with - one of my twins had it and I cried every day until he was medicated and doing better.

  • Hi Goldie -

The label says Lansoprrazole 3mg/ml suspension, my doctor said it was Prevacid, but I'm guessing this is the generic?

Thanks for the info on the timing, I really appreciate it!

  • ...Butting in AGAIN....sorry...

We were on the liquid compound for 2 weeks. We saw a slight difference. However, when I picked up our second batch (it had to be compounded every 2 weeks), it was a dud. Within 48 hours the reflux was terrible, and the medication was not working. We think that the pharmacy either flavored it without my permission (apparently this can reduce the effectiveness of the medication), or just didn't compound it correctly. I asked the Pedi GI for solutabs and we saw a difference right away. They also taste MUCH better and DS actually takes it really well (even smacking his lips with delight!).

  • Thanks Mollymay - it's good to know you had success eventually! I am at my wit's end here. :)

  • Dealing with the reflux has been really hard. But when the med starting working.....our whole world changed. That sounds dramatic, but it's true. GOOD LUCK!
  • Hey Ma, sorry to be butting in as well but just like to add, I've been  certified pharmacy tech for 10 years while going to school and as far as I know the generic for Prevacid is Omeprazole, UNLESS that is a new suspension cause I have not worked in a pharmacy for a year now and lots of new meds gets approved by FDA ALL the time!

No... generic Prevacid is Lanzoprazole.  Generic Prilosec is Omeprazole.

there is no approved liquid compound of prevaid/lanzoprazole- but some pharmacies do make it - but like the other person posted said - sometimes it's not made properly and might not be as effective - since they are not following an approved method, there is no quality control.

the Prevacid Solutabs (not avail in generic) are a great option - once you get the hang of dissolving in an oral syringe with water- they are super easy to administer and do taste great. The only issue being if a doc wants less than a 15mg dose - splitting the solutab can compromise the effectivness, because the active microgranules are not evenly distributed in the solutab- and cutting the microgranules makes them ineffective b/c they need their enteric coating to work- so splitting it can split some of them = less active meds.... so solutab is best for a 15mg or 30mg dose.
