PLing help

DS is afraid of the toilet here at home and especially in public.  And by afraid I mean asking him about the toilet and if he wants to learn to be a big boy like Caillou or Bob the Builder elicits a reaction almost as bad as giving him a bath.  I have to help him though with this fear.  The preschool is going to want him to learn because he won't let them change his diaper if he poops.  I need help here.  Next time I'm near Ikea I'm going to get their potty since it's not super expensive.  Rewards and charts won't work.  I want to try him going pantsless for a couple days here at home but I know that won't go over well.  He wakes up wet but he spends most of the day dry.

Re: PLing help

  • Is he getting EI services yet?  They might be a good resource.

I kind of put PLing on hold with C for various reasons, but he does do better with a small potty rather than the regular toilet.  Even better if I let him play with my iPhone while he sits.  ;)  I know it totally goes against PLing advice, but what if you put the little potty in the living room or his bedroom (or other familiar room) just to get him used to seeing it around?

I'm just as lost as you are, so probably not much help even though I've gone through this before!

I was hoping you'd respond since the kids are so similar.  He is getting services with the preschool.  He starts back up in two weeks.  I could try the phone trick.  That might work.  If I go in the big bathroom with the shower and turn on water he cries and runs away.  It's really sad and heartbreaking dealing with this.  I need to find out if a developmental pedi is covered under our insurance and what my copays are.

I have a friend who let her dd do this. She now will not go into a potty at home or about. She takes the potty and drags it to her room or living room. When they are out her mom has to take a potty and let her pee in the parking lot next to the car.

Because of that I am super leery of letting dd use the potty anywhere outside of the bathroom.

  • C has a urinal that attaches to the side of the toilet. Its awesome Peter potty urinal. Maybe he'd be more comfortable with that and then work towards sitting on the toilet. (I'd link but I'm on MT phone. I got mine from Amazon)

  • I'd try the urinal thing but DS is really scared.  He will only come into the powder room while I'm in there.
  • I started DD on a potty in the living room.  Eventually she showed interest in going in the bathroom and if it weren't for the dang ant invasion it would have stayed that way.  But she did go back in the bathroom on the big potty once that was cleared up.  I know your situation/kid are different, I just wanted to relay that it IS possible.

  • We had a travelling potty for a long time. It drifted to whatever room we were in. We had one in the car. I could NOT get DD to go on big pottys at home and public restrooms were meltdowns.  After we mastered getting to the potty, I no longer allowed it to drift.  I found a place in our open floor plan that she could see us no matter where we were from the potty.  Next, I moved it to the bathroom.  We let school work on the big potty (only option in her classroom) and offered it as an option at home.  We got special seat that had a little kid seat inset in the lid that you could pull down.  She still prefers using the smaller seat on the big potty even though she can do the regular one.

Public restrooms were still a disaster.  We didn't overcome that until she was well potty-trained and did not want to pee in the pull-up.  That was a traumatic experience though, as we were at Disney World.  She had to pee so bad she was walking funny.  She refused to pee in the pull-up. She refused to sit on the potty.  I finally just put her on the potty crying, and talked to her, tried to distract her, called it "mickey's special potty for E", and just hugged her the entire time.  Meanwhile she was a mess of a meltdown.  Finally her body couldn't handle it and she peed in the potty.  She got a ton of praise, a special mickey ice cream, and all sorts of Disney stuff in the name of the potty, etc.  She was really proud of herself, and after that every public restroom is a "mickey potty" which I went with if she was using the public restroom.  She can still freeze up in public restrooms, so I try to find the family bathrooms that are more quiet.
