a question about BCPs

Having been a TTC gal for 12+ yrs. I was not on birth control of any kind.  Since the delivery of the twins, the doc put me on BCPs.  I just have a general "side effect" question... does the pill... or did the pill ever make you moody?  I'm just wondering... because I don't remember feeling like this before taking these...? Huh? I feel like PMS symptoms.  weird.

Re: a question about BCPs

  • I've been on 3 different kinds over the years and have never been moody on them.  (I also just asked DH for good measure!) ; )

However, I've heard that they can cause all sorts of side effects.  If you feel very different than your usual self, you should talk with your doc about possibly changing pills.

  • Oh most definitely! The pill made me a mega-B!tch!!! DH and I are trying to figure out what to do for BC after the twins arrive because I refuse to take it. It wasn't the only side effect I had from it, and that was even with the low-estrogen alternative.

whew!!  I'm glad you posted this.  It's been weird.  It's worse than my pregnancy hormones I used to have.  After you have your LOs... the last thing you want is to feel all those hormonal things again.  I thought i was just tired.... got more sleep.... just hungry.... etc. etc.  i think it's these pills.  Thanks for posting.

  • Oh yes.  I've been on and off the pill for years and have tried many different kinds.  I had one pill (which, like PP, happened to be a low-estrogen pill) that made me insane.  Like irrational, crazy crying jag insane.  My pregnancy hormones are tame in comparison.  And I never got used to that particular pill.

Talk to your doctor and see if they would consider switching you to something different.  I think everyone reacts differently to different pills.

it is a "low" estrogen type pill.  I'm glad i asked this Q tonight.  i'm going to ask the doc for something else... or just go back to icky condoms.

Btw....  also being a mom who was on bedrest, I just want to tell you.. Good Job Mama keeping your LOs growing.  Bedrest is soooo tough.  Hang in there!!

  • the pill can do that- but so can having twins.... realize your body is going through a lot, even months out - and you aren't sleeping like you should, are stressed, etc... so it can all add up.

talk to your OB though - a change might help.

  • I'm def. sleep deprived.  (even with the girls being 5 months)... it's like they just keep getting busier! and more and more awake.  This mama is exhausted.  I think this is the first time I've been on here in weeks.  (the multiples board)

  • Talk to your doctor. I never did well with BCPs due to the hormones/side effects. However, I am sure you are also just so tired and busy with twins. It could be that too!
  • I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (sp??) and didn't have any noticeable side effects, and then my insurance switched and it wasn't covered so they switched me to something else and I had some major mood swings and I'm normally pretty cool, calm & collected!  I decided to fork over the additional $$ for the ortho and never had mood swings again
  • I am very moody on the pill and now refuse to go back on it.  I had been on it for 10 years and struggled with mood problems for years not realizing that the pill was causing much of it.  Once DH and I starting TTC and I went off the pill, I mellowed out and am SO much better of a person to deal with since stopping it.  I still have mood swings during O and just after AF (which really fit the description of PMDD), but STILL, the pill was AWFUL to me.  Hope this helps you.  Condoms are just fine for us instead

  • Are you on a low dose? I was on Ortho lo for years and never experienced any moodiness, but everyone is different and each persons body handles pills differently. Maybe your dr can switch you to a different brand or low dose if you aren't on one already
