New mom, sleepy NB & pumping to relieve engorgement?

My DS was born 12/22/10, and was early @37wks and small @ 5lbs 4oz. My milk came in on Christmas day, when we were spending the day driving from relative's house to relative's house. I got really, really engorged that day & night. I got out my pump yesterday & started pumping to try to relieve the engorgement.

DS is back up to his birth weight now, and sleeps pretty much all the time. I've been trying to wake him up to eat every 2 hours at least, since he's slightly jaundiced. Usually when I have to wake him up, he just nurses for a few minutes, then goes back to sleep. When he wakes himself up, he usually eats well, but this is literally about 3x in 24hrs. I want to make sure I have enough milk so he doesn't need a bottle w/ pumped milk, but I feel like I have to pump almost every hour in order to keep the engorgement under control. Any advice? TIA

Re: New mom, sleepy NB & pumping to relieve engorgement?

  • I delivered DD on 11/19 and, looking back now, realized that in the first 2 wks (for me) my body was still trying to establish my supply, and I had a TON...!  I pumped, due to sore/bleeding/bruised nipples, and got about 3-5 oz from each breast at that time.  Now that my body has established how much I need, I don't get near that much when I pump.

I had the same engorgement issues, sore breasts, engored before 2 hrs had passed bt feedings.  But, that evens out after a few wks, less probably.

I gave bottles starting on day 3, just bc my nipples were in such bad shape I couldn't bare nursing her one more time.  The pump saved me.  I pumped and gave bottles (Breastflow bottles) and would only nurse her maybe once a day and bottle the rest.  Went 48 hrs w/o nursing and that gave my nipples time to heal some, which was MUCH needed.
