My husband and I are in the process of our 2nd adoption. Birth mom thought it was a boy and we were all set on a name but, surprise, it's a girl!! The only girl name we both love is Nya (Niii-uhh). Curious your thoughts on the name and also the spelling. Though we like the "Nyah" spelling better, our last name starts with an "H" so we feel like we should go with the "Nya" spelling. Also, middle name suggestions? So far, we've only liked Grace. Nya Grace. Thoughts?!

Re: Nya / Nyah
Hmmm... this is a tough one. Nya looks like a sound that the Three Stooges would make- I don't know how to spell it phonetically, but you know how they do: "Nya, nya, nyaaaaah!" I think the Y really messes the whole name up.
Niii-uhh (as you put it) sounds like a nickname to me, but it's tricky because in most cases, this type of emphasis is used in boys names. I thought of Josiah having the occasional nickname of Siah. So I was thinking eventhough Niah is not a real name, that if you insist on using it, it should be spelled Niah to get the same sound.
But I still think it should be a nickname for something longer/more traditional. I scoured many sites and I came up with two options: Iphigenia and Shania. This way you could use the nickname you want, and still give her a legit name at the same time!

I agree with PP that it sounds a little harsh...maybe Nyla?

As far as spelling, I'd go with either Nia or Nyah. On behindthename.com they say that Nyah is Eastern African and a variant of Nia, which means purpose. I think I prefer the original, Nia, anyway.

After hearing your suggestions, I do really like the spelling with an "h". We love the meaning "purpose". It goes deep with us. Our daughter (if all goes well on the adoption front) will be AA, so we liked the roots of the name as well.

Olivia- Due December 24th
That's a perfect name for your little one!
Nyah is a lovely name. Congrats!

If you can't tell, most of the women that post here like one particular style of names. They don't seem to like anything that remotely sounds ethnic. If it doesn't sound like a grandma's name, they shoot it down.
