Breastfeeding

Pumping Questions

I would like to start pumping - both to start a stash for going back to work as well as to have some expressed milk on hand so that DH can feed DD.  It's a very basic question, but how do I get started?  Should I just pump what's left after she feeds?  Pump the other side after a feeding (she usually just takes one breast)?  She doesn't really have a routine yet, and at times cluster feeds, so I would hate to pump what she needs to eat at that time.  TIA for any advice!

Re: Pumping Questions

  • Don't start until about 2 weeks, and pump after she nurses in the morning, when you usually have the most spaced out nursing.

  • I agree with what the OPs said about trying to schedule pumping - that's really difficult to do so early. But I do think that you should always pump the other side if she only feeds from one side - so at least start with that.
  • I wouldn't pump yet.  LO is still establishing your supply by nursing.  My LC actually advised me not to give a bottle until 3-4 weeks to avoid nipple confusion.  I would pump if your engorged but other than that I would say wait a bit longer.  When are you returning to work?  She is going to have a growth spurt at around 2 weeks or so and its really good to nurse to establish good milk production. I gave my LO his 1st bottle at 4 weeks and he took it fine.  I didn't really start pumping to build up storage until like 6 weeks.
