Parenting after a Loss

BLWers --- how did YOU know?

I kept thinking DD was not ready because I hadn't noticed any of the "signs" they talk about. This last week (before Christmas) she has been eating 5oz every 2 1/2 hours -- which I attributed to either a growth spurt or just doing it for comfort since she was around a ton of people.

DH then pointed out that she has been shoving anything and everything in her mouth and gnawing on it. I checked for a tooth -- nothing. Also, normally she plays in her bouncer or swing while we eat and lately she has been fussing when we sit down unless she is on my lap.

I am thinking it might be time to try it out...? I can always go back to just bottle and wait a while longer if she doesn't seem to take to it, right?

Re: BLWers --- how did YOU know?

  • Your silly ticker is in weeks?!?! How old is baby girl? We started solids around 5 months because DS was showing all the signs that he was ready and interested... But he didn't do much until 6 months. We could have waited longer. But I don't think it hurts to try.

  • We had to start solids WAY before I wanted to, because DD is on Singulair and the only way to give her that is through granueles on her food. She wasn't really that much into it at first, but lately she has really started to enjoy her food. She always follows my hand to my mouth when I'm eating and she's on my lap, and she's constantly chewing on her tongue and shoving everything in her mouth ( a part of her age milestone, and I think a part of being excited to eat!) She even has started opening her mouth in response to the spoon coming towards her! So it's very possible she's ready to eat!

  • OK, I checked the Bump Glossary, and now I have to ask...what is BLW?  I know it has something to do with eating solids... Smile

Baby Led Weaning. It's basically skipping purees and allowing LO to self feed soft solids :)

Definitely start water in a sippy with solids. Most fruits and veggies will help. Definitely avoid baby cereal. Are you planning to do strict BLW or a mix of purees and solids? Pureed prunes are great for constipation! Bananas can worsen constipation in many babies. Apples and pears are great, but harder to eat unless baked - and then slippery!!!

I don't necessarily believe in "strict" anything, so we will just adapt as we go. Also, I thought all foods needed to be cooked except avocado and banana? We had planned on starting with cereal -- could we mix the cereal with prune juice instead of milk?

  • We started with purees and we're going from there. I'd skip the cereal altogether (or do oatmeal instead of rice cereal) b/c rice (and therefore rice cereal) is very bonding. We did start with it but then DS was not also dealing with constipation like Avery is.

DS started with avocado (b/c I didn't have to cook it). We mashed it up and fed it to him vs having him feed himself. I've heard that the P foods are good for constipation - plums, pears, prunes. DS loves apples, peas, corn, carrots, butternut squash, chicken, and he used to like sweet potatoes and green beans but not so much anymore. I think he'll like 'em again once he can feed them to himself vs purees.

We started solids at 5 months, and tonight he had some pureed peas and corn, plus the rest of a jar of pears & raspberries, and he fed himself a bunch of yogurt melts. He also loves Mum Mums (but again, we're talking about a rice-based product, which may not be great if Avery can't poop!).
