Should I be worried, re: beta levels

hCG Beta 2,013 on 12/22

hCG Beta 3,850 on 12/24

it's not double, but close.  My Dr's office just called me and asked me if I could come down to get one more test today.

What's the "double" rule.  Is it that it has to atleast double, or be somewhere around doubling????

With my DS I never had this type of bloodwork done, but I had a miscarriage back in November so I don't know if they're being overly cautious or if I should be concerned.  Physically, I feel fine.

Re: Should I be worried, re: beta levels

  • that's a doubling time of about 51 hours. They want it to double within 48-72 hours.

  • Increasing is a good thing! And that is pretty close to double, I was told around double when I had mine done, I had it done with my first two pregnancies, (1st was a mc, 2 was my DD) and with my MC they levels actually dropped between the two tests. With my DD the more than doubled, but both times they had said they should be almost double when they told me what to expect after the first draw... Hope that helps!  Good luck!

  • While it didn't quite double it's pretty darn close.  Like the pp said, they look for it to double in 48-72 hours.  You'll be able to learn a lot from your next draw.  Sending lots of doubling dust your way!

  • The chart I have says that for levels between 1,200 and 6,000 the doubling time should be between 72 and 96 hours so you're looking just fine to me.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • No, you should not be worried at this point. The "doubling rule" is that lower betas should double within a 48-72 hour window.

Rate of increase slows the higher the betas are. At this point, they are looking to see that they continue to go up, and are high enough for an u/s. That's pretty much it.

Which is why beta draws at this point are sort of pointless, if doctors aren't going to explain how they work to their patients. I wish medical professionals wouldn't just tell women these numbers without also explaining what they mean, it's irresponsible and causes a lot of needless anxiety.

  • I don't think you have anything to worry about;

Within the first 2-4 weeks after fertilization, hCG usually doubles every 48-72 hours
An increase of 60% in 48 hours is still considered normal
Below 1,200 mIU/ml, hCG usually doubles every 48-72 hours
Between 1,200 and 6,000 mIU/ml serum, the hCG usually takes 72-96 hours to double
Above 6,000 mIU/ml, the hCG often takes over four days to double

  • Anything over 2000 they should be able to determine an intrauterine pregnancy. Repeat betas at this point Are usually pointless because it only tells you that you numbers are increasing.
