I've always known Drew as a boys name, sometimes short for Andrew. After movinga few years ago, we've met two girls in our small town named Dru (one family is good friends of ours). DH thinks we can't consider Drew on our boy name list becuase he thinks it is insulting to the friends whose daughter is Dru.
So, in your opinion is Drew/Dru a boy or girl name?
Re: Drew - boy or girl name?
Dru is just a nightmarish spelling and looks like your paying homage to a certain 90s R&B group.
I've always considered Drew to be a boys name usually a NN for Andrew. I don't think anyone will be insulted. They chose to name their daughter Dru and they had to have known Drew is primarily a boys name.

My brother is Andrew and, occasionally, people have used Drew as a nickname.
However, with Drew Barrymore as an example, Drew could be a girl's name.
Both of my names (Robyn Lesley) can be boy's names (usually spelled Robin or Leslie), especially in the UK. There are definitely names that go both ways (ie. Morgan). Drew doesn't shout BOY at me, really.
Edit: Dru would be a nickname for Drusilla, I guess. Spike's wackadoo vampire girlfriend in Buffy was Dru/Drusilla.

Our son is named Drew (given name, not short for Andrew), and we feel that it's definitely primarily a boy name. That said, it was actually on my list for a boy or a girl because I wanted to honor my husband, who is Andrew/Andy.
Dru is short for Drucinda or Drucilla, which are very rarely used names from a looooong time ago. I'd never seen that spelling / derivation before and then about 5-10 years ago there was actually a crime in our area involving someone named Dru so I heard about it then.

Drew is a boy name.
I would never consider Dru for any child. Still sounds boy to me, though.
Drew is a boy's name. I know two people named Dru (one male and one female). DH's nephew is Andru (Dru).
This. They didn't choose Drew thinking it was a girls' name. They chose it knowing that it was unisex at best and cross-gender at the least, so they wouldn't be surprised to meet a little boy Drew on the street.
It seems more likely they would be offended that you chose the same name because they feel they have some right to it, as so many people do. But this type of post always confuses me--you're concerned a close friend might feel slighted by the name you've chosen, so you ask a bunch of internet strangers how they would feel? He/she is a close friend! Ask them. It's as simple as saying, "we'd like to consider Drew, but for a boy. Would that be okay?" Chances are very good that they wont mind in the least, especially if you broach the subject in advance.
I'm not asking for feelings of using the name, I was curious if people thought of Drew as more of a boy or girl name. To me, it is a boy name, not unisex. I think it is interesting to hear different opinions. Before I met the two Dru's I would have never even thought of it for a girl.
I much prefer Drew for a boys name. However, I do think this is one of the few truly gender neutral names out there.
This=funny. Made me smile!
Anyways, I think besides the horrific spelling of Dru, that the name "Drew" is more boy but I know a few girls named Drew and it's not bad on them at all.
