Parenting after a Loss

Anyone not doing a 1st birthday party?

Of course DH and I will celebrate with DS, but I'm not sure I want to go to any trouble when our families don't seem to care. Every family event just seems to end up with so much drama. Do you think I will regret it if I don't?

  • I think you just have to do what feels right.  I've heard that the 1st party is for the parents because the baby doesn't remember it.

We don't plan on having a big 1st bday party for Mason - mainly because we have 4 kids and we think it's asking a lot of people to attend 4 parties.  We'll just something small with family and a few close friends.

This.  We had one, but it was just my immediate family and a few friends from our childbirth class.

  • We're not really... we'll have DH's parents over and his bro & SIL if they can make it.

I say just make a memory - doesn't have to be a party. Maybe you can go somewhere special with him, an aquarium or children's museum, something you will enjoy and remember.

  • Nope.

If we do a party at all, it will just be a few people and a cake for smashing.  I personally don't get the point of a mega-party for a first birthday.
