Sad Sesame Street

My mom made a CD for Abby of Sesame Street Christmas songs and reminded me of the political correctness that has been done to the show.

It makes me sad that the show I grew up with (that I don't believe damaged me in any way Huh? ) has changed so much.

I, personally, will be looking for DVD series of the early years for A to watch.

Yeah I'm not a Sesame Street fan. I just think it's silly how it is now. I don't need my child being indoctrinated w/ an agenda. There are plenty of other educational shows out there.

Awe, it is sad. We got the book "Pat the Bunny" for Christmas, it was written like in the 50's and it has "feel daddy's scratchy beard" and "put your finger through mommy's ring" and my dad got all PC about how it's not fair to assume every baby has a married mom and dad.

I plan on keeping the girls as far from the new Sesame Street as possible. Part of that is because of my loathing of all things Elmo.

We'll be showing them the original Muppet Show and Sesame Street, both of which are available on DVD.

I think the new Sesame Street is terrible. Its main focus is now Elmo and how PC everything is. I personally dislike Elmo and find him incredibly annoying. I loved the old 1970/80's Sesame Street, and wasn't damaged either.

They have the 50 years of Sesame Street dvd and all the old songs as well on dvd. I'm also going to find all the old cartoons that my husband and I watched as children (looney tunes, muppet show etc, there's more but my mind is blanking) on dvd and buy them.

I agree about Dora 100%. Don't forget about her as annoying cousin Diego too! I think most of the newer cartoon are mindless crap for kids to watch and become hooked on. Along with buying every fvcking accessory to go with them, Oh I need the dora shoes, backpack, clothing...

I know I'm probably jinxing myself by saying that. I am all about the old school Disney princesses but I can't deal with everyone is a pretty pretty princess. No they are not! I didn't buy any clothes that say I'm a princess or anything referencing that. Gifts of that fine, but we're not going to encourage it.

I know Sams had "Old School Sesame Street" dvd's dating from 70's-80's. These are the years that it was actually fun. Now that it's become Elmopalooza I don't enjoy it anymore.

Most kid shows annoy the sh!t out of me. Yo Gabba Gabba is really strange. Dora is annoying. I will probably be letting LO watch my classic cartoon dvd's. They have Popeye, Betty Boop, Casper, The 3 Stooges (cartoon), etc. Disney movies are great too. I wish I could find some Winnie the Pooh or Mickey Mouse from when I was a kid. I don't like that they do everything with computer animation now. Oh yes and Fraggle Rock will be welcome on my tv at anytime.

Also all the old cartoons had violence, we all knew it wasn't real. It wasn't always hugs and kisses, lets love each other. You would never see anything like that on tv today.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one AGAINST Elmo. It's to the point where I *hope* that DS takes his daily poop in the size 2 Pampers with Elmo's face on it :-P

Another show that DS will never watch is Caillou. I find him babyish and whiny and annoying.

Our library has all sorts of old-school Sesame Street DVD's.

Both DD and DS enjoy the new and old versions. I prefer the older platform which was more focused on letters and words with short entertaining clips (and less Elmo). However, the newer version is more concept driven, longer clips...and although it is not what I grew up with, it is a different kind of exposure.

My favorite program right now is Super Why and IMO far supercedes today's Sesame Street. Personally, I think the show is well written for toddlers and preschoolers (good pace, entertaining, nobody is screaming at anybody, letter recognition, manners and reading encouragement). Both DS and DD enjoy that show quite a bit.

And, yes, I think it's ridiculous that all of these shows are apparently so damaging.

I found this NY Times article from 2007 and it talks about Monsterpiece Theater being abandoned because he smoked a pipe and then ate it. REALLY? When did we stop relying on parents to teach right and wrong and start blaming everything on stupid things like comedic sketches? Kids don't know any better, seriously.
