my mom absolutely HATES the idea of me CDing which is weird because my mom has ALWAYS been very supportive of anything i did but when it comes to CDing all she ever says is "oh it wont last".. "i give it a week".. "you have NO IDEA how much work it is and i know your not up for it"... blah blah blah.
now my mom never CD'd so how she would know how much work it is, is beyond me but whatever.... whats REALLY starting to piss me off is how everytime we go somewhere and are around other women (such as: aunts, gmas, cousins) she says stuff like "did you tell them what you have decided to do?" like iv decided im gonna commit a murder or something and of course they all say "oh its alot of work and the first time you smell a dirty diaper you will change your mind"
uhmmm im sorry but dont you have to SMELL and SEE dirty diapers with sposies too?
iv put ALOT of thought into this and im not gonna let them change my mind but dang its getting annoying!
Re: why is everyone SO opinionated when it comes to CD?
People are opinionated about EVERYTHING parenting related- isn't it annoying?? And for a topic that most people know nothing about, they sure have a lot to say about cloth diapering. Have you shown your mom what a "modern" cloth diaper looks like? So many ppl still think of pins and plastic pants... maybe when she sees how much easier it is now she'll lay off?
Or, you can just leave it alone, and then shove it in her face when your baby is 6+ months old and you're still going strong with CD's.
Sorry you're getting so much crap from people!
My favorite cloth diaper shop!
I have been getting this a lot too, especially since we are having twins. I just say, there are a lot of cool CD's out there...they aren't what they used to be.
Yesterday, at Christmas with DH's family I got to talk to his cousin who has a 4 month old they have been CDing since she was 3 weeks. It was so refreshing to talk to someone IRL who is doing it and loving it - even the dad was telling us about how great it is, which actually got DH excited about it!
i dont bring it up but my mom does. lol
i just say "ok we will see".
exactly why i try not to tell people ANYTHING about my choices for parenting.
if it isnt one thing, its another.
and honestly i though DH would be alot harder about my decision to CD but he is all for it! weird!
so, mermaid, how's your water bill? i haven't gotten my first post baby water bill yet, but i'll bet the amount i've increased for washing is equal to the decrease in the long daily showers i don't have the luxury of taking anymore.
to the OP, i got this too. My mom was insistent that I'd see more diaper rashes with CDs -- my baby hasn't had one yet. And my friend did the whole "oh, it won't last a week" thing with me -- but she never tried it with hers! In fact, some of my friends were so appalled when they saw CDs on my registry that they got together and gave me hundreds (HUNDREDS) of disposables. I ended up buying all the CDs myself. I only use disposables when I'm out of CDs or occasionally when I'm running errands.
They really don't seem that much harder to me. Maybe a little more hassle with laundry but honestly, you do so much more laundry with a baby in the house anyway, an extra load every day or two is nothing. Also, once I started using cloth consistently (I "eased" my way into it because my mom freaked me out so much), I noticed how TERRIBLE disposable diapers smell. Like, truly awful.
I don't know why people care what catches my baby's poop, what I feed my baby, when I put my baby to sleep, how much sleep my baby gets, what outfit I put on him for the day, ect. ect. ect...
I deal with the annoying comments all day everyday. I guess it just comes with being a parent. Most of the time I just tell people when they comment that it works for us and our son is as happy and healthy as a baby can be. (Most comments come from my overly opinionated MIL whom I currently live with).
Best advice just ignore it and it Slowly lessens.
me and my husband both love cloth diapering!
enjoy it!

Am I seriously the only one who had family/friends assume we'd CD? Actually, most were aghast that we started out using disposables (we used Pampers before we switched to cloth at 6 weeks). Maybe it's the hippy/eco friendly Seattle thing, but we've never gotten any crap for cloth diapering.
Both of our parents used CDs on us (prefolds/flats) and marvel at the new fancy diapers now. :-)
