Pregnant after a Loss

New here... should I be afraid of Dr tomorrow?

I have my first Dr's appointment tomorrow.  I am afraid to have a pelvic exam/ pap just yet.  My Dr's office typically does this when you are first pregnant.

Well with my first m/c they did this and the very next day I miscarried (probably a CP with nothing related to the exam but I will never know)  My second m/c they did NOT do a pelvic exam the whole 10 weeks.  At the time I never thought to ask why but they were either being cautious OR figured the test results would have been the same from the prvious pregnancy 2 months before.

My question is, when I go in tomorrow, do I have a right to tell them I do not want a pelvic exam just yet?  What would you do?

 Thanks for any advice!

  • I declined this time around since I'd had a normal Pap within the year (with my first pg) and my OB was okay with that.  Just tell them you are anxious and would rather not.  It's definitely a gentle test, so if they insist, I'm sure everything will be just fine, but it's definitely within your rights to speak up.  If nothing else, they can reassure you that it's harmless.

  • Thanks.  I want to decline it, so we'll see how it goes.  The Dr I'm seeing tomorrow is the Doctor who did it my first m/c and who will probably be the most insisting on having it done...  Hmm  My practice has 5 doctors.  Hopefully they will just be cool with it.

  • With my last pg, I got one, and it hadn't even been a year since my last one.  I bled afterwards and even though I knew it was pap smear related and it didn't have anything to do with the m/c, I didn't like it.  I haven't decided if I'll decline the next one or not.

  • I hadn't even thought to decline doing a pap, I have had two this past year. So maybe she can wait. Good idea I will have to ask, not need to do somethign that makes you uncomfortable.
  • I had a pap at 5w4d and everything was fine.

  • Just be honest with your doctor about your fears/concerns. Mine offered (I didn't even think about it or know it was an option) to wait to do my pap until I was in the 2nd tri because she said it could cause some spotting and didn't want to add any stress. It was a great compromise and FWIW when I did finally have my pap I was just fine, no spotting at all.
