Indiana Babies

Jac, Kathy and other Photog Girls

Scott surprised me an got me the Nikon D3000 camera for Christmas.  I have really wanted a nice camera to learn how to take good pictures of our kids.  I have read the manual from front to back 3x and am still SO LOST past the auto setting.

Be prepared for questions in the next couple months as I try to figure this out!

Any start up tips you want to share?

Re: Jac, Kathy and other Photog Girls

  • Oh how very exciting!!!

There is a lot to learn but just keep trying!

The first thing I did (before I even bought my camera actually) was to read Understanding Exposure.  Then I really understood what all of the terms (exposure, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc.) meant and how they affected my pictures.

Beyond that, practice, practice practice.  Natural light is your friend.  Practice in front of a big window and have your kids facing the window (you with your back to the window).

Once you are ready to venture from auto mode, I would recommend trying Av mode.  It's a semi-auto.  Try starting off with an aperture setting of around f/3.2.  I almost always shoot between f/2.8-f/3.2 for one kiddo, maybe up to f/4 for 2 people :) The camera will automatically adjust the shutter speed to provide a nicely exposed picture!

  • I have learned a lot just lurking on the photog board.  I also got DSLR photography for dummies.  There has been A LOT of trial and error.  Have fun with your new camera!
  • What Kathy said... also I think it's totally worth it to pay $3 to join the off bump photog site. secretphotonerds.com You need an invite now though so if you decide to join, let me know and I can invite you. I think I'm on that board the most of all the Indiana ladies and others may not think it's all that great, but they have tons of tutorials and you can always post a question and immediately get helpful replies from folks.
  • So exciting for your new gift!  My husband also surprised me with the exact same camera.  I have no clue about any of it, so I'm glad you asked this question.  I look forward to learning with you and getting advice from those with lots of experience!
  • I agree with all that Kathy posted, as usual ;) hehe. Practice, practice, practice and you'll see progress. Let us know if you have any specific questions as you're learning your camera.
