round ligament pains earlier with each pregnancy?

First off, Christmas was not great.  At all.  Long story short, dinner, guests, everything, was dumped on us with only an hour notice (yay for my mom and dad fighting like 4 year olds).  So, I did a lot of work yesterday--cooking, cleaning, standing, running around.  I started having stretching type pains in my lower abdomen last night, and they still haven't gone away.  When I'm laying down I feel them in my lower back as well.  I've rested the whole day, and now I'm getting nervous.  I know round ligament pains don't really happen until 2nd trimester, but have any of you felt them earlier the second, third, etc. time around?

We saw a very strong heartbeat last week, so I'm trying not to stress out.  But I think I'm going to call my doctor in the morning if I'm still in pain.

Re: round ligament pains earlier with each pregnancy?

  • I barely had any pains with my first pregnancy, but the second pregnancy was awful.  My midwife told me they are supposed to be much stronger in the 2nd pregnancy and mine definitely were.  I don't remember when they first started, but I think it was in the 2nd trimester.  I'm sure you just had a lot of pain from stress and doing so much, but I would probably call the dr. if they keep up for the next day or two.

  • Mine was the opposite... I was in pain for 95% of my first pregnancy. For the first 14 weeks, it was my uterus stretching (felt like really strong menstrual cramps all the time), then weeks 14-17 were pain-free, then when 17 weeks hit, I got major RLP and they continued to get worse through my entire pregnancy. By the time I hit about 30 weeks, even getting up from sitting was ridiculously painful. Rolling over in bed was, like, mind-numbingly painful. Seriously, almost the entire pregnancy was painful for me.

This time? Nothing. No pain. No early cramping. Very mild RLP - only when I roll over in bed or sneeze, and they are really minor compared to last time. KNOCK ON WOOD.

I theorize that my shizz is probably adjusted from being as stretched out as its ever going to be from being pregnant less than 2 years ago. I'd never heard that the second pregnancy could be worse as far as pain goes.

  • I have experienced cramping and RLP much earlier this time around.  Sometimes they're so intense I can barely move for a few minutes until it passes and then it's just generally sore in the same spot for a while afterwards.  I ask my doctor about it at each appointment and she tells me it's normal, especially with second pregnancies.

Drink extra water and try to relax.

  • Sorry you are already feeling RLP because I know how much that feeling sucks!  I had it earlier this time but it didn't last as long and it wasn't as painful.  It was almost like my body needed to stretch out a little bit but was like, "oh yeah, I've done this before" (and not that freaking long ago!)
  • Thanks, girls!  I wasn't in any pain this morning, but now I'm feeling some more--busy shopping day, so that probably didn't help.  I asked Dr. Google last night, and it looks like the pain does start earlier with each pregnancy.  Awesome. Smile
