Nook vs. Kindle

Help me out ladies, I'm hoping to buy an e-reader in the next month or so. I'm trying to decide if I want the kindle or the nook.

Reasons I like the kindle; I can read in the sun. Its small. It looks easy to read. Tons of free books.

Reasons I like the nook; Color. Can read magazines on it.

Okay can you give me any more insight to them? I might go to B&N and feel the nook. But I can't really do that with the kindle.

Re: Nook vs. Kindle

  • I love my Kindle. But I wanted to keep my magazines as magazines, so I didn't even consider a color version of an e-reader.

  • I have a Nook and love it. (Although I do not have the color) I like the fact that if something happens to it I can just take it to the store to get looked at rather than send it back to Amazon. B&N is very good at replacing it if something happened. My fathers wouldn't turn on one day, even though it was charging all night. So he took it back and they gave him a new one. I've had no problems with mine.

Thats the same for me, but I do like the option of taking magazines with me while I travel. We have a few big trips coming up in 2011. But for me it is not a huge selling factor.

Is the nook touch screen? I'm not really a fan of touch screens.

I'm leaning towards kindle. But I am still having a hard time

  • I have the Nook Color and loooove it. I agree with the part about being able to take it back to the store!

    Very good point. Hmmmmm.

Is Nook hard to read on in the sun? Excuse my ignorance on this. I haven't had time to actually go look at them. Kindle seems like it would be very easy to use

Nook Color is touch screen. The regular Nooks bottom part it touch screen. I'm not a big fan of touch screen phones, so I wasn't sure i'd like this. But I do. I like seeing the book covers in color as i'm browsing. I'm not sure if the Kindle has that.

  • Kindle!  I just got one yesterday and have spent most of the day today checking out all the features and starting to look for books, I am loving it!

  • Another factor. I already have a lot of kindle books for reading on my mac. So I just don't know.

Can I read Kindle books on a Nook?

This. Very easy in the sun. AND- DH tells me that because it has an Android OS on it- that the next software release will open up the Android marketplace for Nook so it will pretty much act like an Android netbook-ish.

  • I LOVE my Kindle. I got it for Christmas last year, and have used it pretty much every day since with no problems. The screen is very easy to read in any light.  Obviously, Kindle does not come in color, but I can't imagine reading magazines on there even if it was in color. I have never used a Nook, so I can't compare the two, but I cannot say enough positive things about the Kindle.
  • I have a Kindle and LOVE it. DH got is as a money saver since I read so much and most books are $20 a pop and our local library isn't very good on newish books.

I like the Kindle better because it has a MASSIVE amount of memory vs the Nook that has memory cards and lower memory. At first I thought that the memory cards would be cool but then if you lose them, it's a pain to upload them all again and you have to buy a new one to replace the old one.

I love how Kindle is linked to Amazon. They are super fast with shipping and problems...not that I have had any yet but from other people who have dropped or broke theirs they got replacements the next day. Even if you have a problem with a Nook...if they aren't going to give you a new one they will have to ship it somewhere to fix it.  Kindles and Nooks both have the anit glare thing so it's easy to read in the sun.

As far as color...when I first started looking at them before they came out with color I thought that would be really important to me....but it's not. I don't read magazines  unless I'm traveling so if you're thinking of buying something just because it has color eh...not a good deal breaker. You buy a e-reader for mainly books and newpapers which are black and white anyway! Save the extra money and buy books on your new Kindle or Nook. But I'm a Kindle girl all.the.way.

  • If you want to see the Kindle in person, Best Buy is now selling them in stores. They might now have any right now (they were completely out in pretty much the entire state of Texas two days before Christmas), but you can check.

I got a Nook for Christmas. For various reasons, I liked it better in the long run. I did not get the Color. So far, I've found it very easy to use. I did have some issues downloading something the other day, but I'm fairly certain that was due to the WiFi at my house and not the Nook.

Personally, I think it is a toss up between the two.

  • I have a Kindle and love it.  I like that it is that paper technology and not like looking at a computer screen thus less eye strain.  I LOVE magazines, but wouldn't get a color one because right now then it would be like looking at a computer.

  • I love my Kindle, but I've never tried the Nook.  The Nook definitely has the appeal of the fancy color touch-screen, but I do think it sacrifices variety in usability (the whole reading outside thing, which is a must for me) and battery life for the color and touch-screen

If I remember correctly from my research a few months ago, the other benefit of the Nook that the Kindle was lacking was the ability to share books.  But the Kindle is supposedly adding that feature soon.

Either way, if you are a reader, I think you will love either one!
