xp: 5 months old and eating habits

Our babies get 50% breastmilk, 50% formula.

DD takes 3 ounces at a time and so does DS; on occasion DS will take 4 ounces.  They are still eating every 3 hours around the clock.  Maybe we can get a 4 hour break at night.  They won't take larger volumes.  They refuse and push the bottle away.  I am not into cramming food into them, so I have not forced the issue.

Anyone else still at that point?

Re: xp: 5 months old and eating habits

  • I had to go back to my blog to check amounts. Mine were on formula only at that time.

"They drink between 32 and 37 ounces a day and are finally able to go 3-4 hours between eating."

By 5 months old, they were sleeping from 6 pm to 6 am without waking to eat.  They were getting between 4-5 bottles during the day, so they must have been eating 7-8 oz a bottle.

Hang in there.  You'll get there!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I don't remember the amounts that mine were eating at that age, but I do remember that somewhere around 6 months we increased the nipple flow and it helped them eat more. They were getting tired sucking on the newborn nipples. They ate longer when they got the milk faster. We started with the higher flow nipples at alert feedings and not sleepy feedings.

  • At that point mine had recently started STTN (about 8:30 or 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.) and were taking four 7-8 oz bottles a day. They were on all formula by that point though so I don't know if that was a factor. They seriously had huge appetites in the early months. Way to go with still getting breastmilk into them! I think you mentioned it was hard for you to pump with your work situation so good job!

  • I remember you. We were both on bed rest at the same time. My boys are taking more at each feeding, but I wanted to say great job on still pumping. I am hanging in there too and I know how hard it is.

  • I'd say that's still where we were at that point. They still wake up once each at night to eat, and eat anywhere from 4-6 oz every 3-4 hours during the day, and anywhere from 4-8 oz at their bedtime bottle. They eat solids 3x/day, although not a large amount. They didn't really start swallowing anything much til 7 months, and got more interested between 8-9 months.
  • Oh, we also bumped up their nipple flow at some point, when they were taking forever to eat/eating less/seeming frustrated. We use the Ventaire bottles but the Dr. Brown's nipples since there were more variations in flow than slow and drown. ;p We went from the slow Ventaire nipples to Dr. B level 2, and are currently using Dr. B level 3.
