Acid Reflux?

DD has been very fussy lately.  When we feed her, she strains and cries and pushes her chest out.  We can get her to calm down by burping her (even though we already do after each ounce) and keeping her lying upright like on our chest.  But the second we lay her down, she gets antsy and starts crying.  We were up all night!  Does this sound like acid reflux?  If so, what is the best way to prevent it?  TIA!!!

BTW- definately calling doctor tomorrow, but I know you girls can help fast!

Re: Acid Reflux?

  • sounds like it may be reflux.  some things that might help is to keep her head elevated when she is sleeping.  our pedi recommended getting a wedge to put in the crib.  unfortunately we just have a LO that doesn't like to sleep at night, so i can't say if the wedge is working or not.  my LO is also on axid for the reflux, although i haven't seen much of a change since she was put on it 3 weeks ago.

  • I saw this on 3rd tri and answered but it's not there now I wanted to make sure you saw what I posted for you.

My mother is a nurse and my youngest brother had BAD reflux.  She said it sounds  like that since you didn't say your DD is vomiting or spitting up a lot.

She said lots of burping every time she starts to fuss like that and having her at a little bit of an incline to sleep could help.  Just be sure she's not folded at the stomach area at all.  Even a pillow under her mattress can help.  She had to prop my brother all the time but it did help him a lot.  Best of luck!

  • My DS was the same way... I took him to the pedi and he told me that it was probably a mild case of reflux. He sent us on our way with some suggestions like keeping him upright to feed, propping the head if his bed, and using mylicon drops for the gassiness. I was a little peeved that he didn't offer anymore help, because LO was a big ol' fuss bucket! But, I did all of those things and also switched his bottles to Dr. Browns, and he is a new baby! Still gets a little fussy/gassy after a bottle... But Mylicon is working well, and we make sure not to burp him over our shoulder (he screams! And then spews all over) instead we burp him on our lap sitting up. He also doesn't pull away from the bottle and scream anymore. So, for the most part, it was just minor "lifestyle" changes we had to make.
  • Our little one has reflux and I can tell you, it was so frustrating until we got some help from the doctor. Our doctor prescribed Prevacid and the RESQ Wedge (www.resqwedge.com). The wedge has been a huge help along with the medicine. The biggest help has been leaving him propped up right after a feeding and having a bulb syringe handy when he spits up some. Our little one doesn't spit up during burps, just has it in his mouth so we have to watch and syringe the spit up out sometimes. We also use the Dr. Brown's bottles which help to reduce further irritation of the reflux. The only down side of what our doctor recommended is that we can't swaddle our little guy which makes it tough for him to sleep for longer periods of time. But, we are sticking with this new routine for now and we are hoping that after another week or so he will be sleeping better and be more comfortable. As of now, things have been getting better each day. Hang in there and talk to your doctor for sure. Oh...they also switched us to a new formula, which has been helfpul as well.
