South Carolina Babies

Upstate moms

Hi all,

I'm new to this board--DH and I are expecting our first in February! We've only been in the Upstate for a year and don't know many people with babies here, so I feel like I'm starting from scratch with a lot of things. We live in Seneca and I work in Greenville (DH is getting his PhD at Clemson).

Are there are good baby stores, besides babies r us, for cribs/strollers/car seats, etc? I'd love to find somewhere with people who are a little more knowledgeable about the products they sell.

Any cloth diaper stores? I've googled and not found anything...we're going to go to some stores in Charlotte next time we're there, but it'd be nice to find something closer to home.

Any experiences with Upstate OB/GYN and/or St. Francis? I've only had one appt with Upstate OB/GYN so far and haven't met any doctors, but I'd love to hear others experiences. I plan to have a med-free birth if at all possible, and I'm not sure how that we will be taken once I do meet with the doctors there.

I look forward to any responses at all and to joining this board!

Re: Upstate moms

  • Hi!  Congratulations!!

Have you considered Poole and Bass in Seneca?  They are super natural birth friendly and serve women at Oconee Med.  Sometimes the smaller hospitals are the way to go.  Upstate and St. Fran have a pretty high intervention rate.  The natural birth community tends to steer clear of St Francis.

The only cloth diaper store is at Labors of Love in Spartanburg.  With the distance, you'd probably do best online.  There is a monthly cloth diaper meeting in Greer at the Symmes Library every 2nd Thursday at 10am.  Many expectant moms pop in to put their hands on lots of different kinds of cloth diapers.

If you tend toward more natural choices, you might consider joining the Attachment Parenting Meetup group out of Greenville.  They have a great message board for local resources.

    Hope that helps!

  • Hey there! We are new to the Greenville area and I am going to Upstate OB/GYN....and we have the same due date! Yay Feb 16! I dont have any recs for the cloth diapers but do have to say that I love St.Francis. It is a great hospital. I had to have surgery in May and it went wonderfully. Sorry I'm not much help but wanted to say "hello" and GL!
  • Welcome to the area :-).  I have experience with both Upstate and St. Francis. For the most part I really liked Upstate OB, the drs were great and super cautious as well as very guiding.  There was only 1 dr I didnt like and I was able to only see her once.  I liked St. Francis a lot, but I was okay with a medication.  The nurses were very caring and understanding as well as the lactation consultants.  One of the nurses spent over an hour with me helping my DD latch on and help us with techniques, she did not at all have to do it.

I had a good experience.  Welcome and I hope you find what you are looking for.

There is a new baby store opening at Shops at Greenridge "Buy Buy Baby" There are also several consignment and boutique stores in the area :-)

  • I have no advice either (I'm a first timer as well) but wanted to say hello.  DH works in Seneca (Duke) and I teach in Pendleton :)
  • Welcome! I dont have any experience with Upstate or St. Francis.  I gave birth at ANMEDs Women's and Children's Hospital and had a fabulous experience. But I did want to welcome you to the area.

  • Hello-

Welcome to the area and congratulations. I am due in September (this is my first) and moved to Greenville in November. I have been going to Highlands Center for Women which I love. There are 6 doctors there and after meeting with all them, I have no complaints. The nurses there are great as well, very patient, informative and friendly. I will be going to St. Francis and, from what I can tell and from what I hear, it sounds like a good hospital. As far as baby stores, I recently walked into Burlington and was surprised by the selection they have there-much more than I would have thought. I have also seen quite a few second hand shops on Augusta Road. Good luck!

  • hi! Welcome and Congrats. I don't have much info for you on the hospital or ob/gyn's. I went to Greenville HOspital and had no problems. I've heard St. Francis is not the best place for a natural birth and Easley, well, I just haven't heard great things about them. However, if you are interested in any of the consignment sales around this area, I have plenty of info! Weecycled wear is in Pickens and Upstate kids is in Clemson, Seneca and Anderson. Its a great way to 'go green' and cheaper than buying brand new. They have everything you need for a new baby. Cribs, bouncers, swings, clothes, shoes, bibs, also maternity clothes. All used but in good shape. There are 2 sales  on this weekend. here are the websites if you are interested... https://weecycledwear.com/ and https://upstatekids.com/. These sales are worth checking out. I know you will find some great stuff and even meet new Mom's in the area, athough things do get a little crazy when baby girl clothes are involved. lol
  • I live in Anderson, SC i have a son who is 19mths old and is pregnant with our second. I been here for 4years and is going to Dr Shelly. Any one else going to her? Welcome to the area!
  • I just moved here and my son was already 6 months by the time we got here in June, so I don't know much about the area's birthing places or anything. but i was scoping out some stuff for our next child and there is a water birth center in greenville. you can find it quickly via google search. if you're not into water births i think i saw a few more links for birth centers/midwifery in the area as well.

This exactly! I had my first baby in October 2009 and I went to Highland and delivered at St. Francis. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about both of them, the staff was GREAT! I highly recommended both the practice and hospital. Good luck and congratulations.
  • I am a doula in the Greenville area and I highly recommend hiring a doula for a hospital birth if you want to go natural, or even if you don't know whether you'll want medication yet. Having a doula is PROVEN to reduce the risk of Cesarean by 50% or more! Also, reduce the risk of other unnecessary interventions and epidural requests by 40-60%.  You CAN have a natural birth, but you need a supportive environment, and the hospital is usually not conducive to a natural birth because of the overuse of interventions such as manual breaking of water and Pitocin. Read books, go to a class, and hire a doula= your dreams of a natural birth can come true!
  • Just curious do insurance pay for a doula and how much is it to hire one? I had a csection with son and pregnant again and don't want to repeat a csection. My doctor is behind me 100% but i want to make sure i deliver as natural as i can.

Most insurance companies do not cover doulas yet, but if they do, it works as a reimbursement, so you would pay the doula, and she would help you get the information needed to submit to the insurance company after the birth.

As far as the cost, it depends on how much experience the doula has as well as the area you live in. In California, for example, you could spend $800-$1000, where in the Greenville area the median is $400-500. A doula in the process of certification may offer reduced fee or even free services.

I would be very happy to meet with you, or any other Upstate Moms, for a FREE consultation meeting to answer more questions about what a doula does and why having one is well worth the price. A doula will definitely help you pursue a VBAC. Hope this helps!

  • HI! I go to Dr. Shelley too! Our DD is 8 months old and I'm ready for another one (but DH isn't).

  • Welcome! I also went to Highlands Center for Women for my first baby and delivered at St. Francis. I didn't have a doula, but I did have my husband and mom who were really supportive of my wishes. My mom gave birth four times naturally, so she had some experiance. I really like my OB group and have no problems with St. Francis. I chose St. Francis because I didn't want to change rooms three times during my stay. But they changed their policies about a month before I delivered. I only changed rooms once though - so not to bad.

With this baby I'm not sure where I will deliver because I have a high risk pregnancy. Greenville Memorial has a level III NICU where St. Francis has level II. So this time I will go where is best for baby!

  • Welcome to the area!! I work at AnMed Health in Anderson, and I delivered there. It was a great experience! I have also heard great things about the Highlands Center for Women. I've had several friends tell me they liked it there too! I can't help with the cloth diapers, but we found great baby furniture at Baby Furniture Plus Kids in Greenville. It's on Pelham Road right off the interstate. They have all of their cribs, changing tables, and dressers in all colors set up where you can see them with all the bedding they carry. You can really picture your nursery there!!

  • Hey there! Congrats on becoming a Mommy! We are also due with a precious little girl in Feb! I currently go to Highlands Center For Women. They are a great group of Doctors! I previously went to Upstate Ob-Gyn, but felt like I needed a change when I was told it would be hard for us to conceive. As soon as I got a 2nd opinion, we were pregnant in just a few months. I plan on delivering at St. Francis. My sister delivered her children there and had a great experience with their staff of nurses and doctors. My mother-in-law and aunt are both nurses at St. Francis so I am sure that is why I am partial to having our baby there! Best Wishes on a smooth delivery and healthy baby :) And let me know if you have any further questions regarding Upstate Ob-Gyn.

  • Hi!! I live in Westminster. I don't have any PG friends either so it's been kinda weird lol. I'm due in July with our first and we're steering for a natural birth as well. I was looking into Labors of Love in Spartanburg but the FI didn't want us driving that far. I love Oconee OB/GYN in Seneca. They're very sweet and totally back me up 100%. GL, PM me and maybe we can meet up :)
