Toy storage - if you have a small house

DD was spoiled rotten this year by both sides, and we already don't have much storage for what she already has.  We have a pretty small house and no basement, and if we put too many toys in her room then she just wants to play at bedtime rather than go to sleep so we have most of her stuff in our family room.

We are running out of ways to store things though since we just don't have much room. Right now her stuff is just in some boxes on the floor but they have outlived their usefulness.  I have no idea where we are going to put all the stuff she just got.  Anyone have any kind of toy storage that you really like?

Re: Toy storage - if you have a small house

  • We have a huge storage ottoman that we use as a coffee table/toy storage.  We took all of our blankets and stuff out and use it for Carter's toys.  We rotate what we get out so that he feels like he always has something new to play with.  We also have storage boxes from Ikea that are on our media center that we put his smaller items.  We also use the drawers for puzzles and books.

We have a small home so we need to conserve space where we can.  I want him to have things to do/play with, but I also don't want my living room to always look like a play room.

  • We store a lot of their toys in something like this (from Target):

It holds a good amount of toys.  DH also had the great idea to drill two small wholes in the middle of each bin and zip tie them to the shelf, so they can't remove and dump the bins--that's been very helpful and is another reason I like these bins.

We also have the IKEA Expedit shelving for books and any type of toys that sit on a shelf, and we use some of those large Sterilite tubs to store toys that we switch out, so that we don't have everything out at once.

  • We love the Ikea Expedit for our new house.  They come in various sizes and the bins hold more than the Target cube organizers.  They feel like a bit more quality piece of furniture too and are priced reasonably IMO.

Also we used this at our old small house.  It is on sale at Target this week too.

Don't be afraid to get rid of toys too or lend it out to other new parents.  When we were at our old house I got rid of all the big/baby stuff even though I knew we'd have another kid someday.  The additional space was well worth it to us.

I am spending the day doing this exactly!  She doesn't need all the baby stuff and I'm putting it in searlite containers in her closet.  If we don't have another then we can easily pull it out and get rid of it.  She more than tripled the amount of toys though with Christmas, and of course everything is bigger now.

  • We have the Ikea Besta bookcase system with doors on the bottom.  (You can customize the heck out of the system.)  They make boxes that are the exact right dimensions for the shelves.  Having said that, we have a lot of work to make yesterday's haul fit back into the system.  As my mom said, "We wanted to make it even for everyone, but the kids' stuff is so much cheaper per item!"  The grandparents were nicer to our kids than Santa and DH and I combined.
  • We are currently living in a 2 bedroom apartment so I feel your pain! I went out yesterday and bought one of the cube shelving units from Target with the storage cubes that fit on the shelves.  DD has so much stuff, but I hate taking away her older stuff b/c she still plays with it.
