Two Under 2

2u2 and working fulltime

Hello- DH and I are considering trying for #2, DS is almost 13 months old, so they would be at min. 22 months apart. We both work FT, I wor 7.30-4 and he works 9-7. We've had a fairly easy time with DS, we've got a good schedule down (I leave for work at 7, DH leaves and takes DS to Daycare around 8:15 so the mornings are very unhurried. Nights though, I am usually by myself from 4:30 when I pick DS up until about 7 when he goes to bed.

Is anyone in the same situation, working fulltime with 2u2? If so, how hard is it really? We're 34 & 38, so time is our main factor in having #2 so quickly. Thanks!

Re: 2u2 and working fulltime

  • I work fulltime, and mine are 21 months apart.  The biggest 'issue' we've had is sick-time (aka time off daycare), but we would have that issue whether they were 2y or 4y apart.

I did go to a slightly reduced schedule - I'm a CPA - 35 hr/week April-Dec, and 50 hr/week Jan-April.  I love this age difference and honestly, getting into a weekday routine was pretty smooth.

  • My boys are 16 months apart. It is totally doable.

Honestly, it isnt that different from having 1 in day care. You already have your routine down and are used to dropping off and picking up from day care. Now you are just adding one more into the mix. When DS2 was really young, I had to wake up really early to make sure I could get myself and the two boys ready and out the door on time. But now that they are older, it is really easy. After work can be a little hectic because they are usually both hungry, tired, and a little cranky. I usually make them dinner and feed them as soon as we walk through the door and then they are fine. We do baths, and then hang out and play until bed time.

The only real difference is just that I have 2 kids that get sick now. So I have to take more time off from work. Thankfully, DH and I can alternate so it isnt so bad. But DH and I both have great understanding bosses, so that really helps. (And DH and I both have access to work from home, so when the kids are sick we can still get a few things done when they are sleeping and check emails and such).
