Babies: 9 - 12 Months

DS spiting up a lot - again

DS was on Zantac for reflux when he was a newborn. It helped and the dr told us that we could take him off of it when we thought it would be okay. And he was okay for like 2 months. There was also some disagreement between doctors as to if he had a milk allergy or not so he was put on soy formula.  Now, he has started spitting up again. Could the reflux be back? He is on stage 2 foods and I am not sure if he could be allergic to something else that is in the foods. I looked at the ones in the pantry and only one kind that we had has eggs (maybe he is allergic to all dairy?) but the others did not. We go to the dr on Monday but I was just wondering if anyone thought they were past the relux and it came back.

Re: DS spiting up a lot - again

  • The height of spitting up is 6-7 months, right before they are upright on their own (sitting, crawling, cruising, walking). Second, eggs are not dairy so if he ate babyfood with eggs they would be a whole seperate allergy than dairy. Also if he was acting fine (comfortable, no issues eating and less spitting) for 2 months it would not be his reflux coming back. Could be something he is eating is not agreeing with his tummy. My dd spits up whenever she eats anything with apricots in it (rarely spits up otherwise). Likely not an allergy just doesn't agree with her stomach. GL!!

  • FWIW, my DH's Aunt is a Homeopathic Doctor. She told me that Soy is actually much more difficult for babies to digest then dairy.

DS was put on soy at 6 months when I weaned and became "pukey" right away. I kept him on it not knowing for nearly two months. Once he was weaned to dairy formula again the spit ups became less frequent. Now that he's crawling it's even less.

He's gone from about 10 times a day to about every other day.

Another thing that MD's don't tend to tell you (or know is that when babies start sitting up, the stomach sits in a completely different place causing them to spit up much more until they become used to it.

Don't know if this info helps, or confuses the situation. Just thought I'd share.

  • DS has been on the soy formula since he was about 3 months old or so. He was on some other formula (Neocate) until then. Also, he is sitting up on his own so maybe that is what the problem is. Thanks for your help!
  • I'm so glad you posted this.  DS is on Prevacid for reflux and his spitting up was starting to get better but it seems to be getting worse again.  And now that we're doing solids in the highchair instead of bouncy seat I've noticed it has gotten worse.  It makes complete sense that sitting up is different than reclining and can make spitting up worse.  I can't wait till it gets better.  Getting sweet potato stains out is not fun!  LOL!

  • I don't know that I can help but allerigies tend to be noticable in the poop, do you see blood or mucus in the poop.  My DD, 7 months, has reflux and is on her third med - Prilosec - as she keeps outgrowing the dose and it stops working.  We are down to about one major throw up a day.  I have noticed that she goes through phases though where it is worse and then it gets better again.
