What to do when Motrin doesn't reduce fever?

Hello - my DD has had a fever of around 102 since yesterday.  We really don't have any idea why she has the fever, other than the fever she seems fine, not sick or anything.

So far, with Motrin we've been able to keep it down, but not we gave her Motrin at about 2:30 and it's not going down.  We also tried giving her a cool bath to see if that would help.  I have a call in to our nurse, but I thought someone here might be able to give me some advice while I'm waiting for the call, I've never had this happen before, not sure what to do?  Thanks.

  • My pedi wants a call if the fever is 102 or over and can't be brought down by Tylenol or Motrin.  If it's been 3 hours since the Motrin you can try to piggyback Tylenol to bring it down.

  • We just went through this and took DS in yesterday for a spiking fever. I think what could be happening is the motrin is working but her fever is spiking so instead of spiking to 104+ it's probably staying at 102 because of the motrin. When DS's fever got to 104.3 we took him in. They said to look for other unusual symptoms like excessive diareha or vomiting, but unless it got to 106 we should just keep him comfortable. It is most likey a virus if there aren't other symptoms and there isn't much you can do in that case. Hope you get a call back soon to ease your mind.
  • I only use Motrin for pain and Tylenol for fever. Never had a fever bad enough for Tylenol not not work. Hope LO feels better

  • With a fever and no other symptoms, it could be a urinary tract infection. I would get it checked out. DD had a random high fever when she was 4 months and it turned out to be a UTI and she needed a round of antibiotics.
