Catching Up - birth story, elfster t/y (longish)

Hi!  First of all THANK YOU Lori for posting about the birth of our little girl, Zo? Gael.  And thanks to all of you for your well wishes - it was nice to read at the hospital on my phone.  Unfortunately, bumping from a mobile device is not user friendly, so I've had to wait until I got home to respond.

So...first things first, the birth story.  I actually went to work on Thursday (12/16) - mainly b/c it was the holiday party and I wanted free food.  :)  That night, I started having strong contractions about 10 - 30 min apart.  Rookie mom called the hospital, but they told me to take a shower and wait.  :)  I called in sick on Friday since I didn't get any rest.  By around 6 PM, the contractions were about 5 - 8 mn apart so I called the hospital again.  When we arrived I was 3 cm dialated.  They suggested I walk around for an hour and check again before they admit me.  I swear the delivery wing is only 1/8th of a mile, but it took over an hour for me to walk it.  After that I was 4 cm and admitted (hurrah!) - MH was certain they were going to send us home.  I have to be honest - I thought I had a high threshold for pain, being that I run marathons and all that.  Um, yeah no.  I'd rather run 100 miles than endure full on contraction pain.  :D  So I pretty much got an epidural after I was settled in my room - and then I heard angels sing, sighed and fell asleep.  Over the course of 6 hours I dialated all the way to 10 cm - yippie!  Everyone thought, wow, we're going to have this baby Sat morning.  Unfortunately, the epi prevented me from feeling much.  In fact, I never felt that "rectal pressure" they talk about.  I pushed and pushed, we turned down the epi and turned on some pitossin (sp?), the contractions got way wicked worse, and I pushed for 2 more hours.  She barely moved.  :(  So after nearly 3 hours of active labor, the dr said I had 2 options: use the vacume and pushing or c-section.  We discussed the pros, cons, and risks.  It boiled down to the fact that if we used the vacume, there was a possibility I'd end up with a stage 4 tear as my perinium as already quite swollen - that is pretty much a full tear from front to back (ugh, makes me queasy just thinking about it).  One of the side effects/risks is uncontrollable pooping...for the rest of my life.  I thought, "Hmm...I don't want to wear Depends at 36" so we opted for the C Section.  I was whisked onto the OR and, seriously, 15 min later Zo? was born.  Unfortuntely, the block I was given went a bit high, so all I could think of was it felt like I wasn't breathing.  The NICU was there b/c Zo? had been hanging out after my water broke for so long, but the entire time her vitals were great.  So I didn't get to hold her right away, but then again, I also couldn't move my arms.  MH was wonderful, and if anything brought tears to my eyes was how much he immediately fell in love with his daughter.  Anyhoos, I ramble.  Recovering from a c section sucks - I feel I can't do barely 1/34of what I want to do - but I'm trying to be patient with myself and just recover and get better.

Second, while I was in the hospital (I am so thankful that my insurance/dr allowed me to stay an extra day.  I cannot imagine going home only after 48 hrs after major surgery) my elfster gift arrived and MH brought it to me!  THANK YOU so much Robin (rwright5) for the xmas footed thingy (?) and bib.  The footed jammie is soo warm and she loves it!

Anyways, thanks for reading!  On to the next adventure!
