DD eats fruit every morning and for lunch. Berries, melons, oranges are pretty expensive right now so I thought I'd buy her some canned fruit. I got exited when I found some Del Monte peaches and mandarin oranges in water until I realized they were artificially sweetened.
Are there any canned fruit products that aren't packed in syrup/juice and aren't artificially sweetened? You know, like natural applesauce? Ugh, why do companies have to screw things up and add crap to our food?
Re: Does this kind of canned fruit exist?
The canning process takes away a lot of the taste and texture, that's why canned stuff has a lot of added sugar and salt, to make it palatable.
What about frozen and making it into a smoothie? Or making your own fruit sauce out of it - just defrost and puree? Frozen fruit is usually flash frozen, so it's minimally processed and as close to fresh as you're going to get in the middle of winter when nothing is growing.
My DS loves fruit, too, but we stay away from canned products - almost all canneries use BPA in their lining. With acidic foods (citris, tomatoes, etc.) a lot of that leaches into the food itself.
Have you looked at frozen fruits? A lot of times you can get frozen for less than fresh, but sometimes we find the taste is a little dull.
