Baby Names

Nya / Nyah

My husband and I are in the process of our 2nd adoption. Birth mom thought it was a boy and we were all set on a name but, surprise, it's a girl!! The only girl name we both love is Nya (Niii-uhh). Curious your thoughts on the name and also the spelling. Though we like the "Nyah" spelling better, our last name starts with an "H" so we feel like we should go with the "Nya" spelling. Also, middle name suggestions? So far, we've only liked Grace. Nya Grace. Thoughts?!

Re: Nya / Nyah

  • Love the middle name Grace.  Not so much liking the first name.  Nya just sounds harsh to my ears.  I also think it clashes with your DS's name.

  • Hmmm... this is a tough one. Nya looks like a sound that the Three Stooges would make- I don't know how to spell it phonetically, but you know how they do: "Nya, nya, nyaaaaah!" I think the Y really messes the whole name up.

Niii-uhh (as you put it) sounds like a nickname to me, but it's tricky because in most cases, this type of emphasis is used in boys names. I thought of Josiah having the occasional nickname of Siah. So I was thinking eventhough Niah is not a real name, that if you insist on using it, it should be spelled Niah to get the same sound.

But I still think it should be a nickname for something longer/more traditional. I scoured many sites and I came up with two options: Iphigenia and Shania. This way you could use the nickname you want, and still give her a legit name at the same time!

  • I like it better with the h on the end. I relate it to the name Sarah or Sara and Nora or Norah.  In both cases I like the h spelling better.  Have you considered the name Nyla?  That one is on the top 1000 names (pretty far down though).  We considered Nyla for #2 if he was a girl.  My DH really loves it.
  • I have a girl in my class who goes by Nya. Her name is Jenaya (rhymes with Papaya). She is from a diverse family and one of the sweetest little girls you have ever met!

  • I agree with PP that it sounds a little harsh...maybe Nyla?

  • I don't mind Nya and think Nya Grace is fine. I also like the suggestion of Nyla Grace. Congrats on your 2nd adoption!
  • I love the name Nya. I think it is very sweet.
  • I like Nyah. Nyah Grace is beautiful!!! Keep the H.

  • Pretty! My son has a classmate named Niah, pronounced "N-eye-ah." (I can't tell if Niiiii is supposed to be like N-eye or Nee.)

  • As far as spelling, I'd go with either Nia or Nyah. On behindthename.com they say that Nyah is Eastern African and a variant of Nia, which means purpose. I think I prefer the original, Nia, anyway. :)

After hearing your suggestions, I do really like the spelling with an "h". We love the meaning "purpose". It goes deep with us. Our daughter (if all goes well on the adoption front) will be AA, so we liked the roots of the name as well.

  • I would go with Naia or Naya.
  • I think it sounds really pretty, but I don't like either of your spellings. Maybe Naya? Rhymes with Maya, so I think it should be easy for people to pronounce.

  • My sister's name is Nya.  I have never heard of anyone else with this name.  I think Nya Grace is really pretty.
  • I also was going to suggest either Naya or Naia.  Naia would be my preference.

  • I love it and it will fit your new baby girl perfectly. I think I will put it on my short list if I have another girl. Either spelling is fine. I like your sons name also.
  • I love it and think it goes well with Declan. Great Irish names.
  • Not a huge fan but I like it better with the H.

If you can't tell, most of the women that post here like one particular style of names. They don't seem to like anything that remotely sounds ethnic. If it doesn't sound like a grandma's name, they shoot it down.
