Does this kind of canned fruit exist?

DD eats fruit every morning and for lunch. Berries, melons, oranges are pretty expensive right now so I thought I'd buy her some canned fruit. I got exited when I found some Del Monte peaches and mandarin oranges in water until I realized they were artificially sweetened.

Are there any canned fruit products that aren't packed in syrup/juice and aren't artificially sweetened?  You know, like natural applesauce? Ugh, why do companies have to screw things up and add crap to our food?

Re: Does this kind of canned fruit exist?

  • Because it's very difficult to put food in a can and have it be palatable months and months later. Citrus is in season right now and is as cheap as it's going to get. Apples are also still cheap, as are pomegranates.

  • The canning process takes away a lot of the taste and texture, that's why canned stuff has a lot of added sugar and salt, to make it palatable.

What about frozen and making it into a smoothie?  Or making your own fruit sauce out of it - just defrost and puree?  Frozen fruit is usually flash frozen, so it's minimally processed and as close to fresh as you're going to get in the middle of winter when nothing is growing.

  • Yes, I've been doing a lot of frozen fruit, apples (since that is always in abundance) clementines, and persimmons. Oranges are expensive and not always juicy so we usually stick to OJ. Just another reminder why I hate winter.
  • Dole makes those little fruit cups and now come in 100% fruit juice!  DD loves the peaches.
  • We do some frozen too.  Berries are so much cheaper this way.  DS loves fruit, but I try to stay away from canned foods if I can because of the BPA.
  • My DS loves fruit, too, but we stay away from canned products - almost all canneries use BPA in their lining.  With acidic foods (citris, tomatoes, etc.) a lot of that leaches into the food itself.

Have you looked at frozen fruits? A lot of times you can get frozen for less than fresh, but sometimes we find the taste is a little dull.

  • We buy a lot of frozen.  If peaches are what you're after, Costco sells gigantic bags of frozen organic peaches

  • weird that you say berries and oranges are expensive...both are cheap right now in arizona!  i bought blueberries 2 for $3, blackberries for $1 and oranges are 19-cents/pound.

  • The canned fruit that is packed in unsweetened pear juice is the healthiest canned fruit you can buy. I strain and rinse them in fresh water, then pat them dry with a paper towel when I get them for my kids. I also do this with fruit packed in syrup.

  • I suggest looking in the freezer section, that's where I get a lot of fruit for LO, sometimes I mix it into yogurt, and sometimes I just let it thaw and then serve it cold as a snack, I love it that way, and he seems to really like it as well when his teeth are bothering him.
  • I give my son frozen fruit. It's cheaper and it feels good on his teeth/gums. It lasts long, it doesn't make a mess, and it has nothing in it.
