Names and Social Security issues

Dont know why i didnt think to post this until now but just an FYI to those expecting MoMs....

DH and i named out LOs Michael and Michaella (Mi-kay-la) we tried for weeeekkks to get DS SS# (he was baby B)  but they had us under investigation b/c according to SS they use childs fist 6 letters of thier name, last name and date of birth.

Well my LOs had the exact same info.  It was a nightmare.  We finally got DS SS# when he was almost 3 mo old.

So if you want to spell LOs name the same for the 1st 6 letters be sure to bring with you both birth certificates. despite what SS admin tells you! Took us 3 weeks to find out they had us locked down and investigating us then another 3 or 4 weeks to get everything straightened out then time to get it in the mail!!

Re: Names and Social Security issues

  • So I've always wondered; is Michael a family name? Or how did you choose your kids' names?

  • Its actually a long story. but ill condense it!

DH always wanted a Michael (his first name but never wanted a junior so different middle name).  I said no way bc i hate having the same name as father and son it gets too confusing (nephew is a jr and i hate talking to my side of the family about him i never know if its him or his father) and i thought if he was not going to be a jr then what was the point.  but i did tell him i would name our daugher Michaella after him.  We agreed on Michaella as a girls name and decided on Colton for a boys name.

then at our 20 wk u/s we found out it was TWINS.... and then we found out the sexes was b/g.  DH was under the impression it was still Michaella and Colton.  Well as time went on i kept saying the names out loud togther when he wasnt around and i just didnt like the combo.

so a week or so before i went into labor i approached DH and asked if he wanted Michael and Michaella.  he felt bad bc he knew i didnt want Mike and Mikey thing and said no we would keep colton.  I was in the hospital and told him he only had a few hours to make up his mind on our sons name bc i wasnt making the choice.  he never gave me a solid answer until the nurses asked his name was the first time i heard DH say "Michael"

As far as DD spelling... this is going to sound AWFUL but here it goes.  it was supossed to be Mikayla.  I would text friends that and email it and EVERYONE made fun of me.  they said phonetical (sp?) speling was stupid.  So i looked into other spellings and they had Michaela but it seemed WAY to close to Michael... so i thought well i will add an additional "L" hahaha! I know not much different but the second i saw it i loved it!

Then they became my little M&Ms! On a day to day basis i call them Mikey and Kayla.. so its never too confusing.

  • Got it, thanks for explaining.

Yeah, Mikey and Kayla doesn't sound matchy at all. I think it's too funny though that you went into it not wanting matching father-son names and ended up with matchy father-son-daughter names! ;)

  • doesn't surprise me - it seems nobody can figure out that just b/c two babies have the same birthday doesn't mean they are the SAME BABY.

We have had so many issues with insurance only paying for ONE of the babies medical treatments - b/c they thought they were double billed.

Our sons are Grayson and Gibson --- similar, but certainly NOT the same.... you'd think they'd have figured it out by now that people have TWINS sometimes- golly gee!

  • That's crazy, Goldie! I don't think that happened to us, though it did seem like it took a long time for the initial hospital bill to get sorted out since some of the paperwork was just labeled "Baby Lastname." (Or Baby Boy Lastname, maybe, but that didn't help either. ;)) I wonder if it's harder if they have the same first initial for some reason?

OMG this was an absolute NIGHTMARE for me.  They never pre-certified baby "B" and then submitted everything with their real names.  So Baby "A" was covered, Baby "B" was not, and neither were the actual children, Reagan or Alexis.  What a total PITA

  • We got the advice to ask the people processing the SS# to NOT process the twins right after another so that their #s wouldn't be just one digit apart. They nodded, and said "okay, sure, we understand" but then did just what we asked them not to do.

So, our LO's SS#s are one digit apart and it has been a huge PITA with lots of mix ups.

  • our insurance still has a hard time with the twin thing. they have sent all the EOB's for Jakob but Michael's comes 4-6 mo after.  my dr. office said they are behind in paying for M. youd think that theyve never processed twins before.
  • The issues we seem to have are around drug prescriptions. They deny one or the other because it is the same med for for kids with the same last name and birthdate. Walgreens told me insurance companies do this all the time for twins.

  • One of my boys has the same first name middle initial as dad and it annoys my DH. They are only 6 weeks old. Ha! He should have thought of that.

I was just at Walgreens on Tuesday dropping off identical scripts for the boys.  The lady asked me for their b-day... so I told her and left.  10 min later she calls me in a huffy (they were very busy that day) saying you gave me prescriptions for two different people but only one birthday!  Took me a while to convince her they had the same birthday (not sure what part of twins she didn't get).  And then we got to insurance... apparently another major shocker that twins would be on the same insurance.

  • I have a cousin that has b/g twins that were born on either side of midnight, so they have different birth dates. It's been a nightmare for them with insurance, as the company can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that you can have two kids with two different birth dates inside of nine months.

LOL. You just can't win, eh? Same birth date, different birth date; twins just mess with people's minds, despite the fact they're not that uncommon!

You know, I don't think we've ever had the same Rx for both boys except for when they were on Zantac. There were some eczema meds our pedi prescribed for both of them but she would just put it in one boy's name so we could start with one container and see if it worked. We never had a problem with the Zantac; got it from our mail-order pharmacy.

And once we got the delivery stuff straightened out, we haven't had issues with the insurance coverage. I think I do remember people saying it helps (with the systems some insurance companies use) to have different first initials.
