1st Trimester

Hearing/seeing a heartbeat...how soon?

U/s shows that baby looks good but there wasn't any sign of a heart rate.  Gyn is optimistic and sending me to another u/s next week.  Baby is measuring 8wks and 1 day...shouldn't they be able to hear/see a heartbeat at this point?  I'm just wondering if he's not telling me the whole truth...

PS  I had both a regular sonogram and the wand.

Re: Hearing/seeing a heartbeat...how soon?

  • We couldn't see anything with an abdominal u/s at 6w2d but with an internal u/s we were able to see the h/b that same day.

ETA: The heart starts beating at the end of week 5 or early week 6 so I am not sure why they couldn't see the h/b. Inexperienced tech perhaps?

  • We saw the h/b yesterday and I'm somewhere between 6w5d and 7 weeks.  Agree with PP- maybe it was an inexperienced tech?  I'd probably give my Dr a call to discuss.  GL!!

  • We saw the heartbeat via internal u/s at 7wks and again at 10wks.  Since my OB does an u/s, we haven't yet heard the heartbeat via doppler.

A woman at work said her MD uses the doppler at 8 weeks, but I've also heard that sometimes they can't pick it up and don't try so that they don't worry people.

  • I am not trying to be unkind, but I want to make certain that I am understanding correctly. You are measuring over 4 weeks behind according to your ticker and there was no heartbeat? I am baffled as to how your OB reasurred you about this. I think you need to get a second opinion ASAP or go to the ER. This is not something to take lightly as it could effect your health.

For reference, I was able to see this baby's heartbeat at 6 weeks 2 days.

    Good luck, hon.

I had your exact thoughts. I hope everything is okay. We were able to see our baby's heart beat at 6W5D. I hope we are all wrong in our worry.

  • They could see the heartbeats when I went for my first visit at 11w but couldn't hear them because yet.

  • My 1st US was at 5w4d and we did not see a HB. I went back at 7w1d and there was a HB

    good luck!

  • On an u/s, usually the heartbeat can be seen at 6-7 weeks. I have seen a couple ladies on this board not see a HB until week 8, and one went on to have a successful pregnancy and the others m/c. It's possible things are fine, it's possible they are not. Stay positive until your next appointment or u/s!

Yes, there's a very good chance that I could be miscarrying.  I've been bleeding for over a week now, saw gyn twice and had one sonogram and another scheduled for next week....oh, and the baby is measuring 4 wks behind.  I was trying to see if gyn wasn't telling me something (you know that they really don't want to tell you, unless it's for sure).  I've been preparing myself for the worst, but hoping for the best.  He said that the baby looked fine but they couldn't pick up a heart beat.  Besides the bleeding (as if it were the end of my period), I feel fine.  Just hoping for the best...thanks ladies!

Usually seeing a hb is possible between 6-7 weeks...but sometimes a "tilted uterus" can make this more difficult - see the website "misdiagnosed miscarriages" (google it) for positive stories where this happened.

Thanks!  I'll definitely do this later....dd just woke up from her nap...lol!

  • I saw the heartbeat yesterday at 5 weeks 6 days. This is very early though and the doctor was very surprised to see it so early. Every baby develops differently and at their own rate so I would not worry.

I say this with the best of intentions, but I'm shocked that your doctor would not be able to tell from that ultrasound what is going on.  I had an ultrasound when I was 10 weeks and even I could tell in an instant that my baby's heart had stopped beating and that the baby was far too small.  I'm so sorry but I don't think not seeing a heartbeat combined with bleeding will lead to anything good.  Huge hugs to you.
