textural issues=sensory ?

DS had his 2nd OT appointment today. He's getting OT to see if he has textural issues or if he's just a super picky kid. He doesn't like any kind of veggies. So he ate his mac n cheese and a piece of fish. The OT tried to get him to eat some butternut squash and she spit it out. SO now she says he has sensory issues because he spit out the squash. She said if a kid spits out something it makes it sensory. I wasn't there and my mom was. I'm confused by this. Couldn't he just not like veggies? Does this mean he'll have other sensory problems? Can you just have an aversion to textures and not any other sensory issues?  Please advise. TIA

Re: textural issues=sensory ?

  • My son was referred to ST for a feeding eval to see if he has sensory issues with food.  He has no other sensory issues as far as I can tell.  I ended up canceling the eval because he had tried some new textures and he was sick (throwing up) the day of the appointment.  DS spits stuff out but I never considered it a big deal.  It is usually with a new food.  Now I'm wondering if I should reschedule the evaluation...

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

This was a new food too. He was never into green veggie purees (who does?) as a baby and he has never liked veggies. I'm just surprised that she says its sensory because he spit out the butternut squash. He didn't gag or anything.

My DS won't even try veggies (unless it's in his veggie soup), fruits, or any other new food, for that matter. I am going to have to look in to this with my DS, too. He is 2.5 years old and is pretty picky with what he will and will not eat.

Thanks for posting this. I am going to look into this, as well.

  • I'm a pediatric OT and, while I don't deal with a lot of feeding issues at my current job, I do see a lot of sensory issues. To say that a kid has sensory issues just because he spit out one food seems like a HUGE stretch to me. I know you weren't there and your mom was - any chance that your mom is relaying the OT's words incorrectly? If I see a kid who spits out squash and several other foods that are the same texture, I'd start to be concerned, but not over one bite of one food. Did the OT have you complete a Sensory Profile for him? It's not the world's best assessment by any means, but it's a good start to look at patterns in sensory seeking or sensory avoiding behaviors. You're his mom - DOES he have other sensory problems besides food? Does he hate brushing his teeth or having his hair washed? Does he love or hate to be barefoot in grass or sand or other textures? Does he have problems wearing any types of clothing? Does he crash into everything when he plays (excessive roughhousing)? Does he eat fruit or other "smily" or "mushy" foods? Does he eat veggies if they are raw or prepared in other ways? There's a lot to consider when looking at sensory concerns! Those questions are just a small sample.

Oh, and gagging wouldn't necessarily be indicative of a sensory concern. If a chid gags on foods then there is more to consider, including his or her oral motor skills (musculature of cheeks, tongue, etc) and swallow/gag reflexes. There are some kids who have major oral sensory issues who won't even get the offending foods to their mouths.

And some kids really do like green veggie purees. My kids hated green bean puree, but loved peas and zuchinni and liked (or at least ate) spinach puree.

  • Baby4OT: Would you mind if I sent you a private message regarding my DS? I have a few questions about this sensory thing!

    Thanks!

  • My child has sensory integration issues. And although sometimes food has  a part in it. It is not the only exclusive "sign". I have never met your child, so I can not say either way. Good luck.
