Thyroid levels?

I've been noticing that a few people have been posting about their thyroid levels. Are they typically checked with the first blood draw? I was kind of surprised when I got my lab results back and my TSH wasn't checked. I've had an underactive thyroid for years, and they know about it, which caused the surprise. I'm not even sure if my OB will be keeping track of it during my pg or if I still need to see my PCP. Just not sure what to be thinking.

 TIA!

Re: Thyroid levels?

  • I'm hypothyroid and since I had my levels checked in June (prior to pregnancy, of course) she said she wouldn't worry about it for a while...and actually JUST checked my levels again.  She said since I've been hypothyroid for several years that I would probably be the best indicator of low thyroid levels so just to "be aware" of how I'm feeling and let her know if I notice any low thyroid indicators and she'd test me again.  She said she probably wouldn't test me again for another trimester or so.  Not sure if this is how other doctors are treating it or not!

  • I have a hypoactive thyroid (hashimoto's disease actually) as well and I let my doctor know that it was one of my concerns (darn the internet for making me paranoid).  She did a test and just called to let me know that she's increasing my meds because my levels were way off.  So I am very happy that I brought it up....low levels can cause quite a few bad side effects for the baby.  If you're worried, it never hurts to bring it up since they already take so many tubes of blood, what's one more? :)

  • Thanks! Mine is Hashimoto's too. I have an appointment coming up on the 30th, so I will definitely ask. I am a little nervous about where my levels are. It's been about a year since I've had them checked, so I'm due. I haven't been feeling any symptoms that they're off, so I'm not too concerned, but I know that pg can cause them to go out of whack. So again, thanks!

  • FYI Hashimoto's ladies:

I see an endocrinologist and your levels should be closely watched (like tested every 4-6 weeks.) The main thing they should look for is the TSH to be around 1 or 2.

As pregnancy progresses, demands on your thyroid increase and it is very important to keep a close eye.

  • I didnt know i had anything wrong, it showed up in my first set of blood tests, they automatically checked it thankfully, as my levels were super low and i had to go on medication. Through the pregnancy i will be getting it checked once a month to make sure i am getting the right dose of medication and to see if it will need to be changed. Thankfully they tested and i was able to get on medication right away =)

  • To OP - I think I would call back and ask for a TSH screen - perhaps they just overlooked it? From everything I read, the thyroid needs to be monitored in women who have thyroid disfunction prior to pregnancy.

I am hypo- and my TSH levels went up at my 6 week intake, necessitating an increase in Synthroid. I didn't get checked at my 12 week, but assume they will check at 16 weeks. If not, I will ask for it.

    Good luck!

  • I've had mine checked a couple of time from being in the hospital and ER.  My ob said that my levels were super low, and that she was concerned that I was 'hyper', and that it might be one of the causes of my severe m/s and hyperemesis.  I had to just get them rechecked to see if it was just a fluke, or if it was really that bad.  Never did hear, so I'm hoping that means that I had an incorrect reading the first time.
  • I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in May and have been monitored by my Endocronologist monthly.  Hyperthyroid is different from Hypo because the medication options depend on whether or not you are going to try to conceive or are pregnant.  I am on PTU and need to have bloodwork and monthly appts. with my Endo to monitor my levels.  At my last appt. my medication had to be increased because my levels were so low.  I had asked my dr. if there was ever a chance to be off of the meds during pregnancy and he said the risk of hyperthyroid untreated is greater on the baby than taking the meds to control it.

If you are concerned I would def ask your OB again and then ask them for a referral to an Endocronologist to be sure all of your levels are monitored and where they should be!

  • I see my Endocrinologist to check levels every 6 weeks. I just had to up my dosage. He said pregnancy levels can fluctuate more frequently, so it is good to get it checked often.
