Does this sound like yeast?

Yesterday morning, my son woke up with a red, inflamed looking p enis. It felt kind of dry to the touch, like the skin was very dry. I put some CA Baby on it a few times and noticed it looked red and dry still today. He had his physical and the dr looked at it and immediately said it was yeast. Although I had given him a bath, there was still a little of the white CA Baby cream on it and she did not look at it closely. She told me to put some cream with Zinc on it and if it didn't get better, to put a product made for jock itch on it. I commented that I had better sanitize my diapers and she said that washing them normally should be fine.

I currently have him in a disposable diaper with a thick, stinky layer of desitin on it. We use prefolds and Bububebe along with Fuzzi Bunz, and BG. Of course, I don't want to bleach anything if I don't need to and am worried about how things will come out of the wash.

Re: Does this sound like yeast?

  • If you aren't sure, the best way to know if it is yeast is to treat it with antifungal. If it gets better, it was yeast. Try Lotrimin AF (in the sposie) and Desitin over it. If the pedi said yeast then it very well could be.

I know you are very experienced. I just grabbed one and got the Lamisil AF. Should I brave Target again for the Lortimin. I know it's a different ingredient.

Any tips on the diaper washing?

I don't know what's different between the two but my pedi told me to use Lotimin AF. I know CA baby has an anti fungal not sure which ingredient it is though. DD has a yeast rash now and the pedi gave me a rx which is not helping so I went back to CA baby and it's almost gone. Haven't tried Lotrimin but I did with my oldest DD. Hope it clears fast!
  • Did you bleach your cloth?

I also read this to clean the diapers.

    • cold wash with Tea Tree Oil (3-4 drops in a FL, 4-6 drops in a TL. add to detergent compartment for FL)
    • hot wash with an oxygen cleaner (Vaska OxygenBleach or Bio Kleen Oxygen Bleach Plus are options)
    • lay out in FULL sun (if you live in the south this isn?t a problem) or dry on HIGH heat.

This regimen is safe to repeat after a week in order to kill any remaining yeasties.  TTO could be interchanged with Grapefruit Seed Extract if you prefer.

  • I bleached and used baby oxy clean. I didn't use TTO but I guess that's the anti fungal ingredient is in CA baby b/c it has TTO in it. Oh and I don't sun because I wash my CDs after she goes to bed but I could see that helping.
  • Lamisil is fine. We used that at one point when Lotrimin did not seem to be curing his rash. I always buy target brand.

I know bleaching your diapers is scary, but they will be okay. The only thing of mine that discolored were the Thirsties Fab products (fab wipes, fab fitteds). B4s, GMs, BGs, BBs, etc. are all perfectly fine and I've done this more than once.

But my advice is to stay in sposies 1 week after the skin is clear. Going back to CDs too quickly was our problem so I am very cautious about that. Also you want to keep putting the antifungal on the skin for several days after the rash is not visible. The yeast spores hang out on the skin.

  • Thanks! He looks totally normal but I am going to treat it for a week anyway. Thanks for the info in the diapers washing up OK.
