chances of twins with IUI???

My DH and I will be seeking IUI #1 next month after an inability to find anything wrong with either of us(15 cycles). DH has an 11 year old and 7 year old to a previous marriage. Will IUI with Clomid increase our chances of multiples? I have done a ton a research and have read mixed opinions. Should I try IUI without meds first??? I'm so confused.

  • Yes Clomid may increase your chance of multiples since it may cause you to grow more than one follicle.  If you decide to go w/ meds, you may want to start w/ a very low dosage and see how you respond. Your doctor will monitor you via ultrasound as well. Good luck!

  • So the doctor will monitor me via ultrasound and advise if it is multiple eggs??? I'm sorry but I am just learning about this procedure.

  • It depends on your response to the meds and the number of mature follicles that are present with trigger.

  • Does anyone know roughly how much one cycle of an IUI costs?? My insurance will only cover the infertility testing and not the IUI or IVF???

  • iui cost depends on what meds you are using. if you use fsh then you will be monitored almost every two days after starting the meds. that monitoring cost will add up. but if ou just take clomid you will only haveone monitoring visit and the iui. that may be like 500dollars compaired to 1000-2000dollars. but again it depends with the clinic you go to.
  • Another possibility to consider is that some ladies respond too well to the IUI meds and have too many follicles.  While some dr's will cancel IUI if there are too many follicles, some ladies will get converted from IUI to IVF during the cycle itself, which could catch you by surprise if you don't know this is a possibility.

I'm starting in Feb or March and OOT is $300 for the weekly visits, sperm wash and the actual IUI. Meds are a different story but I'll be starting out on only clomid and whatever drug to make you ovulate when they want you too so I think a total of $400 which isn't too bad IMO.
