s/o foam playmat - cleaning it?

We haven't gotten out our foam playmat yet. We have carpet in the living room so it doesn't seem essential right now. How do you clean yours, and do you keep your animals off of it (and if so, how??). At this point it seems easier to just keep cleaning the carpet instead of adding the foam, but who knows.

  • The dog knows she isn't allowed on it.

We clean it with Clorox wipes.

  • We had those mats when LOs were younger.  My only problem with them was both my LOs liked to spit up a lot so if the spit up and it was on a crack it would seep through to under the mats... yuck!

so DH and i found it was easier to put them in the tub and wash them entirely.  This got old fast so we tossed them! But on a day to day cleaning i just did clorox anywhere and paper towels.

  • Ditto on the wipes. I've never had any issues with the spit up leaking through...and mine are doing plenty of spitting up!
  • I use Clorox wipes to clean them. They work great and I try to clean it every other day.

As far as keeping the animals off of it, the cat thought it was a giant scratching pad and would claw the mat. A squirt bottle full of water shot at him a few times got the message across that he wasn't allowed on it. He doesn't go on it anymore!

  • I have a total love/hate relationship with our mat. Our dogs will not stay off of it, and even if they did their hair is everywhere anyway. The hair gets stuck all over the bottom and once a week I pull up the mat, take it apart, and try to get all the hair off. It never all comes off the bottom. I have vowed to throw the damn mat away a few times, but Eli's poor huge noggin needs some cushion from our wood floors.

I also use wipes in between the major cleaning.
