Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Shudder attacks?

Are any of you familiar with or have experience with Shudder Attacks?  My little guy has had a couple episodes where his body shivers for a couple seconds then stops.  He makes a bit of a funny face, but after the shivers stop, he is not phased or bothered.  I looked online (double edge sword, I know) and this does not seem consistent with infantile seizures or spasms, he doesn't bob his head or draw his arms and legs into his body, he doesn't jerk around.  I read online that these shudder attacks are due to an immature nervous system responding to overstimulation or excitement.  The teacher at daycare says she has seen this in several children at mealtime.

Does anyone have any feedback on this?  I plan on asking my son's Pediatrician in a week at his 9 month WCC.  Thanks!

  • I've never heard of this, but it seems logical.  I noticed a couple times when DD was very excited like when we went to pick her up after being at my mom's for 2 days and another time after she hadn't seen my DH for a couple days her lips would shudder a bit before she could actually express her excitement.

  • I don't know if there is any truth to this, but my MIL says "Oh she just peed"  everytime DD does exactly what your describing.

This!! My DS does the "shuddering" a few times a day that I notice. Its usually after he wakes up and is sitting looking around (waking up still). Have you ever peed (normally when you wake up) and it makes you shiver?! I always think of that when he does it. I was worried at first but he's fine before/after and it only lasts a second.

  • DS does this all the time. He shivers a lot, especially when he is eating or is really excited while we play with him. I don't think you should worry about anything though. I've heard of babies doing this. Maybe if DS doesn't grow out of these shudders then I would start to worry, but right now I don't worry.

  • DS did this when he was really upset when he was sick last week with bad diaper rash and diarrhea.  Shuddered when being changed because of being uncomfortable and then during feeding the following day b/c he was so hungry/dehydrated.  (It was only temporary both times but scary for me nonetheless to see it)  Your explanation of the nervous system theory makes a lot of sense to me since he was probably a little overloaded with emotion etc. at the time.  Those 2 times are the only times I've seen him do that.
  • My son had shuddering attacks started at age 5 months. He had an EEG and was cleared. They stopped by age 3. He would draw his hands in to his body turn his head slightly and his mouth would be stuck in a type of grin with his teeth clenched and shake for a moment , usually feeding time or playing with toys. Nothing in my families... years later. baby two... now two years old my daughter has them. We are taking her in to get a specialist so she can be cleared for her EEG as well. She does them much less than he did and we actually think/thought they were on purpose except for the fact they look exactly the same as his did, thus cannot be that coincidental meaning not on purpose. They were both born a month early so is this a connection??  I would like to know more. When this happened in 2006 there was zilch online about it and now there is a lot which is nice for new parents.
