Ovarian Torsion?

Has anyone heard of this or had this?  If so, can you please share your experiences?

Many thanks!

Re: Ovarian Torsion?

  • In Febuary 06 I had a cyst removed from my right ovary. When the doctor got in there the cyst was so big that it had caused ovarian torsion, and my ovary needed to be removed because blood flow had been completey cut off from the ovary. I also lost my right tube because of loss of blood flow.

My issues first started in November of 05. I don't know if the outcome would have been diffrent had they removed the cyst when the pain started. A few years later I was talking to my RE and she told me that it is rare that an ovary would be removed for torsion. That it is more common for the doctor to un-twist (not sure if that would be the right term) the ovary and most women would go on to have normal ovary function.

  • Thank you, Jen!  If they had caught yours in November, would they have just untwisted it rather than remove your right ovary and tube?  The on-call OB/GYN in the ER today said it's possible that ovarian torsion is what I have going on (pretty severe pain in my lower right abdomen and lower right back), but there were no blood supply issues at this point.  My ovaries are still quite enlarged due to the fertility meds.

They want to monitor me the next few days/weeks to make sure that bloodflow doesn't stop, but I'm still concerned...

Did you use fertility meds?  They thought it could be related to our IVF...  UGH!

    Again, thank you!!!
