XP: LO won't go down at night

I know he's still brand new and to give him some time, but I am already worried about him getting in the habit of sleeping on me at night instead of in his PnP or somewhere else. During the day we can usually get him to sleep for a bit in either the PnP or the car seat but at night he doesn't seem to want to be anywhere but on top of me. It also doesn't help that once he falls asleep after feeding he poops up a storm which in turn means he wakes up when we change him, which then means he wants the breast again, which usually leads to another dirty diaper...vicious cycle! I've been sleeping with him on the couch so I am able to get a bit of sleep myself but like I said, I don't want this to become a habit (I know someone who has a 10-month-old who STILL won't sleep anywhere but on her or her DH!). We have the PnP butted up against our bed so he'd be right next to me at night...it's just a matter of getting him to actually go down without pitching a fit. We've been swaddling but sometimes he tries to Houdini out of it (it really seems like there's only 1 blanket he likes to be swaddled in and of course that's the one he exploded on last night, lol). Any suggestions?? Or anyone else going through something similar?

Re: XP: LO won't go down at night

  • All I can say is give it some time. We're dealing with the opposite issue, Piper sleeps alright at night (between midnight and 6am she wakes every two hours, but goes right back down) but during the day she will not sleep anywhere but our chests. It really sucks, I can't get anything done, the second I put her in the swing, car seat, bassinet, etc she wakes right up. We are going to buy a rock and play tonight as soon as DH gets home, I hear they work well for babies who feel insecure laying down. Maybe you could try that?

Have you considered getting a Moby wrap or similar?

  • We had the same issue and it's starting to get better. My best advice is to change the diaper when he wakes, then stuff him full of BM- like keep massaging your breast and stimulating LO after you think he's done to make sure he's really full, then snuggle until he's really drowsy, then put him down. Maybe it's gross, but I never change LO after a nighttime feeding, or we'd never get to sleep. She often poops during/after feedings too but I just change her at the beginning of the next feeding and it hasn't hurt her yet. Besides, if I change her right after a feeding she often poops again or continues pooping after that.

    That's my best advice.

All of this too! At night, as long as she is okay sitting in her poo, I'm okay with it too! We change her as soon as she wakes up (for each feed), no matter how hungry and screaming she is.

  • I am having the same problem. My son is almost three weeks old and he sleeps on my chest pretty much the entire night. I try and lay him down in his bassinet but he wakes right up. So i am usually so tired i just pick him up and we fall asleep on the couch with him on my chest. I actually sleep and same with him. but i agree i dont want to get into the habit of this. But i also need my sleep at night. My doctor said it wont last forever its just cuz he is new. give it some time. If you come up with anything let me know. :)
  • i dealt with that for about 3 weeks. he now sleeps in his crib. we swaddle with a velcro swaddler so he's nice and snug. sleeps from 9-10 until 6-7.

  • We did this until she was a month old. Watch the DVD "Happiest Baby on the Block". You can read the book too, but if you were like me, reading a book was impossible with a newborn. Our LO sleeps swaddled in a swing (on the highest speed) at night. We are currently transitioning from the swing to her bassinet and crib during the day and before she is 3 months she will be in the crib at night too. Once we put her in the swing she switched from sleeping 2-3 hours to 4-5 hour stretches. Your LO might still be a little young for the swing (I think they recommend you start using it at 2 weeks). Anyhow, this was a lifesaver for me and SO.
