Induction and internal fetal monitoring?

This may be a silly question, but for those of you mamas who were induced did you have to have internal fetal monitoring or did they just use the external monitor around your belly?

Re: Induction and internal fetal monitoring?

  • As far as I know, they only do the internal monitoring after they break your water. They will be doing this with me because my LO is a brat and really likes to play hide-and-seek with the external monitors. So if your water isn't to be broken right away, they'll use an external until they break your water and then possibly an internal after that.

  • My water broke and I had to get augmented with pitocin but only had external monitoring.
  • I only had an external monitor for LO. I had an internal monitor that monitored the intensity of my contractions but really had nothing to do with LO.

  • I was induced and had an internal monitor. I had two internal monitors, actually - one for the baby's heartrate and one for contractions. They put the heartrate monitor in bc DS's heartrate was dropping during contractions so they wanted to ne sure they were monitoring accurately. They put the contraction one in bc I wasn't progressing enough even though contractions were showing up on the monitor so they needed to put the internal monitor to actually see how strong the contractions were.

That beige said, I don't think any internal monitoring is standard for an induction unless indicated for some other reason.

  • They had trouble getting my LO's heart rate on the external so they did the internal.  The doctor broke my water by accident when he was putting it in.

This was basically me too! I went in last Thursday evening and they did Cervadil  and tried the external monitors. Basically the only way they'd work well is if my mom or DH spent the entire time holding them on and searching for her when she moved away from them. After a couple of hours of the nurses having to reposition and have my family help the nurses asked the dr if they could just check once an hour for 20 mins and that's what they did until the morning when the dr came in to break by water and also do the internal fetal monitor. I also eventually ended up with the other internal monitor because they were having trouble seeing the contractions and needed to know how strong they were.

When my dr and I had discussed the induction she had told me they'd only do the internal monitor for baby if they had trouble with the external one so it will probably really depend on if your baby is a hide and seek baby or not. Joanna spent the entire pregnancy moving away from monitors so this was nothing new for us. Smile

  • Yuck!  It looks like it's pretty common then Sad  I really, REALLY do not want them to use an internal monitor.  I've already agreed to way more interventions than I ever wanted.  Maybe I will get lucky and go into labor before my induction - it seems like there is less of a chance of using one if I go naturally.

Also, is there a difference in whether the hospital will use it or not if you are GBS+?  It seems like it would just encourage bacteria to be transported back up into the uterus with the use of an internal monitor Sad
