worth renting a pump?

I have the medela freestyle. It's a hard worker but I've heard that hospital pumps are better. I'm not really sure how they are better. Any experience with a comparison between home vs. hospital pumps?

Re: worth renting a pump?

  • I rented a hospital pump for about 3 or 4 months right after DS was born and it was great. Had great sucktion (sp). The downside is it was large and only had a plug in option so no taking it with you places. When I tried to use a Medela pump in style it was a bust and I could get almost nothing pumped.

They are pretty cheap to rent at least mine was. I think it was about $30.00 or so for the month. And since you already have the tubes and cones you will not have to buy thoes.

It is worth a try to see if you can get more onces pumped.

  • I think it would be worth a shot.  I rented one from Evergreen before I bought my PISA and I think it was about $40/month.  I am actually able to get more with my PISA than I did with the hospital pump which I find odd, but I think that may have more to do with other factors.
  • I'm not renting one, but here's what I think: if you can express more milk in less time, and feel like you are providing for W better, that is worth the expense.  You'll be a much more relaxed and happy mama with more time to spend with your son than your pump.

When I went in to Evergreen's baby boutique to buy replacement parts for my PIS and was debating an upgrade, they offered to let me try out the rental pump for a few days (and even there in a private part of the shop) and wouldn't charge me for the full month if I had wanted to do that.  You might want to check into that.

  • I have a Medela PISA at home, but my employer has hospital pumps for nursing moms to use at work. The hospital pumps are FAR better in my opinion. I get more milk out, and it seems easier (less breast massage, etc to encourage let down).

I think this is excellent advice!  I rented a hospital grade pump the first month and while it's not really portable, it was pretty fast.  I get similar results now w/ my PISA but I it takes me 20 minutes instead of 10.  Since I SAH and only do 1 pump session per day it works for us.

The Evergreen try it out thing sounds like a good option to me.  Plus this is a finite period of time, not like the life long commitment of raising W.  Whatever you decide, just know that you're doing what's best for your family!!
