DH and I already have TONS of pictures of the girls. We've been very thorough about labeling them so we know who is who while we can still tell them apart. We've been burning back up DVDs and I think I'm going to get another external hard drive for just photos of the girls, as I have an external already for my non-baby photos. I'd like to keep them separate. DH is also keeping his own copies just in case.
I'm also thinking about getting them developed and then starting albums for each of them. I hope I'm not going overboard, but I really want to make sure we don't lose them.
The photos are already adding up, and they're only 6 days old! How are you keeping yours organized?
Re: How are you storing your photos?
we don't print many at all - but I do make photobooks (on shutterfly, etc) with their photos now and then... i used to do it every 3 months with dS1 - but since the twins i'm SOOO behind so now i do it for big events, or sometimes a month (like Oct, was busy with lots of stuff) or a season, etc.
burning to CD doesn't last very long... i wouldn't trust that... and even external hard drives can crash (DH had one crash)... so i'd back up mulitple ways. We use Carbonite.com and LOVE it.... it was great when my computer crashed- i could access all of my files online via Carbonite while it was getting fixed - i never worried about losing anything --- well worth the $50 a year!!
i also upload to shutterfly, costco photos, and FB - so they are in multiple places.
I save in files by month - and then put those into yearly folders at the end of each year. This has been the best way (after a few years being digital and making files for events, etc --- it's better to have the events sorted into months or it gets crazy).
it's wise to save the files with their names in the file name, esp if they are ID.
When I pull pics off my camera, I put them into folders labeled with from/to dates and times (e.g. 122010 6pm to 122310 9am). I upload the best of any set to my flickr account (well, I had been -- haven't lately). I have been planning to get an additional external drive, but haven't yet. We also just bought a printer that supposedly does nice photos, so I hope to print more out in the near future.
You are right to have a plan-- they add up FAST!
That being said, I took way more pictures when I was on maternity leave than I do now (which is a little sad).
