Any toddlers have a hearing test?

James is at the Audiologist right now getting a hearing test. (I hate that I have to be at work - thankfully DH has a lot of flexibility)

James only says about 3 words and mostly just babbles.  He had tubes put in almost 2 months ago and his speech therapist does not know if he just needs to play catch-up or if he is still not really hearing.

Anyone with experience with this?  I am not sure what to expect and do not know when/how we will get results.

Re: Any toddlers have a hearing test?

  • My girls see a NICU dr as well as our pedi and she recommended they get their hearing checked.  Not for any specific reason, just to make sure everything is ok.  The test took about 5 min for each of them.  They checked their ears to make sure they were clear of was and no sickness.  Then we went into a room, one at a time, and had them sit on my lap.  The tester was in another room facing us and she would make sounds that would be on either side of the room and would watch as the girls would look towards the sound.  The sounds were either her talking or their were musical stuffed animals that would make sounds.  She just wanted to make sure they looked towards the sounds.

I think we got our results pretty quickly.  We had to take Lauryn back for a second testing because she did not do so well on one ear but she passed the second time.

  • jbl - good news about your tests.  I hope his test is like your b/c that doesn't sound invasive at all.  I was able to get him in quickly b/c they had a cancellation and I forgot to ask about the specifics.  His appt was at 9:15 so I am anxious to hear from my husband.

  • I hope everything goes well. Just another note, they dont use the headphones on the younger ones since they wont leave it on and they dont really understand it.  So hopefully, he has the same kind of experience my girls had.

  • The test went great!  He sat on my husband's lap in a booth and they had speakers on either side.  He would turn left or right when the different pitch sounds went off.

He heard everything except a few high pitch sounds but they said that could be b/c he has a head cold.  They will test again in 1 1/2 months but this was good news to us and a huge sigh of relief!
