Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How do you handle family giving LO food/sweets w/o asking?

We've been to two holiday parties so far and had people give our 6 month old sweets!  WTF!  I am so mad at this.  One was my Dad, he gave LO a chocolate covered oreo and luckily my Mom was standing right there and ripped it out of his mouth.  The other was my SIL who gave LO some frosting off of a cake.  I am so mad an upset at them both that they would do this and also that they wouldn't consult me or my husband before doing it.  ugh!  Has anyone been through this yet?  How did you handle it?  It just makes me lose trust, ugh!

  • I would be LIVID.  And I'd say something.

"LO can't have that, please don't feed him anything without checking with me."

    "Why not?"

    "Because he's 6 months old."

"Oh, it's just a little, it won't hurt him."

"It won't benefit him at all, either.  Please just don't."

    If that doesn't work, be a b!tch.

Me too. I can't imagine someone doing this. I guess just say something before you leave LO with relatives unsupervised...I usually keep an eye on LO when folks are holding him, etc. unless it's one of a handful of people I really trust holding him.

Hey you! I am wicked mad!!  My Dad was like "yea okay" when I told him not to do that and how his lil tummy is not ready for that kind of stuff yet.  I think he thinks we are over-protective or something when in actuality it's just what's right for him.

PS- Love Riley's pic with Santa!  She's getting so big!

  • Yes I have. It pisses me off when grown azz people can't follow simple instructions. I take my baby back and advise them again loudly...Do not give her junk. She's 6 (however many) months old! WTH is wrong with you?

Emma is a year old now and when we're in walmart I'll go by the bakery and let her have a mini cookie. She can have 1 not 2 dozen. I monitor her sweet intake and 6 months old is too young IMO to be handing out sweets.

  • I let DS taste what we're eating most of the time so it usually doesn't bother me, especially since I am there and I don't give him a lot. However today I went out to the living room to get something to eat on my break and I notices that DS's paci had icing all over it. I was so livid that the IL's gave him a sh!t ton of frosting, especially without consulting me first.

It sux that people just don't know better to begin with.  I guess things would be too easy that way huh?  I haven't talked to my SIL about it yet and don't really want to cause upset over the holidays, but when they come over I need to make it clear he's not to have anything without running it by us first especially since if he had a reaction our pede is not open and would have to go to the E.R.....Okay I'm thinking far ahead, but I guess that's what Moms do right?  It's sad, she has three boys of her own and has been down this road a lot, I am more disappointed in her than my Dad....

  • It's so frustrating. I don't understand people's enthusiasm for feeding my baby junk food. He'll get enough of that later on in life. Now that he is nearly 8 months old and has eaten somany different foods, I'm a bit more lenient. I let FIL give him ice cream (he has been wanting to for awhile) but just a taste. I will let DS lick teeny tiny tastes of most things now, but I wouldn't have at 6 months.

This exactly!  I'm lucky that my ILs wouldn't do that or let other people at Christmas do it.  But if we were with my family, they'd be trying to feed her all kinds of stuff, especially sweets.

  • Been there done that! FIL asked if he could give him some whip cream and I made it quite clear that it was a big fat NO! Anyways I went into the kitchen to start dishes, went back into the dining room to grab something and he has his spoon loaded with whip cream and is ready to put it in my sons mouth! Well I freaked, I was across that table and grabbing the spoon out of his hand so quick! This was over 2 months ago so he wasn't even 6 months yet and I was double pissed since he had asked me and I made it clear that he wasn't to have any!

  • Unless your LO has allergies or we're talking about a baby less than 6 months, then really a taste of whatever is not the end of the world. It's really not.

I don't think its the end of the world but I think the issue is more about respecting the parents wishes. If I don't want my baby having sweets then I think that should be respected whether or not it will harm him. Its not like he wants sweet things yet or knows what he's missing so I'd just rather he didn't have them.

  • I HATE this! I am dreading a gathering tonight bcuz of this!

One of my apparently crazy aunts once gave DS Sweet Tea, Whipped Cream, and Chocolate Syrup all in one week...when he was about 5 months old. Could've have stabbed her really. I just stared.

I know this sounds ridiculous and I actually think it's kind of sad, but because I'm so young if I speak up about something like that they just all tell me that I'm young and I don't know what I'm talking about even though I'm sure that I've read much more on parenting/health/safety issues than they have. I've tried, but all they do is ignore me and mouth me. ugh

When your LO is introduced to something he/she has never had before, how do you know they aren't allergic?  My lil guy has only started on pureed foods (fruits and veggies ONLY) so to introduce something like Chocolate behind the back of and w/o the consent of a parent is not cool!

  • I don't like it at all. But like most of you have said, it tends to happen anyway. When it's not their kid, they don't think of it as being a big deal. If it's just a taste, I try not to get too upset about it. It's usually an older relative, trying to show love to my baby. They aren't doing it just to spite me. I usually just politely say that she doesn't eat those kinds of things yet.

This made me think of how my cousin allows my DD to chew on her finger. This infuriates me. When she has her baby (in Feb) I am going to let it chew on my finger, and see how she likes it. Lol.
