3rd Trimester

Ugh! L&D Nurses.

They come in to check on me, and even if I'm sleeping they make so much noise that I wake up. They either let the door slam behind them, or start messing with stuff and moving the monitor around. Then tell me to go to sleep because I need my rest...uh... you just woke me up 2 hours before my doctor is breaking my water and you think I can sleep now???

Re: Ugh! L&D Nurses.

  • From working in a hospital I know sometimes it's hard not to wake a patient when you're checking on them even if you're just fixing the monitor.  if he keeps happneing bring it up to your doc sometimes thy will decrease checks to only as needed to fix monitor/important stuff or spread them out to every 3-4 hours.

They are just doing their jobs.

After I had my c/s, I had someone from the hospital coming into my room every hour or so. It was either the lab, a nurse, an OB or a cleaning person. Even the cafeteria would call me if I hadn't ordered food. As much as I might have gotten irritated (mainly because of lack of sleep) I realized they were doing what they were doing because they were helping to take care of me. Plain and simple.

She's right. Last December when I had Emma, I had a nurse, cleaning person or relative coming in nearly every hour. I didn't want to be rude and have a "no visitors" sign since I never knew who was coming to see me. I was always being woken up for blood pressure check, temperature check, check the incision, check the clotting, get up to pee, take my meds, here's some juice, eat these crackers, order your meal, ordered to get up and walk and that's not even every 3 hours when they brought the baby in to nurse or be held. It's so difficult to get sleep in a hospital.

Be easy on your nurses...they are the ones who do the work of taking care of you and your LO when your OB isn't there. The OB is there for the delivery...the nurses take care of the rest.

  • I'm not being monitored or anything though, they just come in to check on me I guess but when they see I'm asleep why slam the door? lol I haven't had any sleep practically because I've been in the hospital all week, and for some reason I feel awkward sleeping in the hospital. Plus they are breaking my water in an hour, and the anticipation is killing me and I got practically no sleep last night. So I'm kinda moody. :/

  • If they didn't come in, you'd be on here posting that those horrible nurses didn't check on you.

In reality, they probably aren't being that loud.  However, since you're not in your normal environment, it's hard to sleep anyway, so any little noise wakes you.

Nurses have a job to do, and unfortunately, that job is usually inconvenient and bothersome for the patient.  Not much you can do about it but accept that.

  • If they didn't check in you'd whine because they are not doing their jobs.  Its pretty tough for them not to make noise.  And generally hospital doors are heavier so unless the nurse is literally holding on to the door as it closes there is nothing he/she can do about it and they don't really have the time to be doing that.  You might as well get used to someone waking you every couple of hours any how because you're having a baby!

  • Yes, princess.. because you're the only woman to ever go into labor; therefore all nurses should be extra careful not to rouse you from your slumber.
