NBR: Dog destined for the pound

Ok not really but I am upset. Remember I said he ate one of my favorite ornaments, well he has now eaten 2 more. Including one of my 12 days of Christmas ornaments from Crate and Barrel. Then we went to the mall last for a few hours and came home to find that he went into my pump bag and ate a bottle and shield!! I could kill him.

DH is off today so he is going to run to BSB for new supplies. I just don't know why this is happening. It all started once Greyson started to crawl. Spencer is clearly agitated about the crawling but I don't know why that translates into chewing. He is still being exercised and given as much love as possible and we try and keep Greyson away from Spencer.

  • Ugh, I feel for you-my dog is driving me nuts too.  I know it's because J gets a lot of attention and is always with us.  I feel bad, but clearly, I have to take care of my kid.  Is there anyway to shut him off from certain rooms when you're not home?  We have a door between the kitchen and dining room so he's only got a few rooms to roam when we're not home, as opposed to the rest of the house.  Good luck, I know it's hard :(

  • Not the same, but our cat has been misbehaving a lot lately too. She LOVES Eve, but I think the fact that she isn't the "baby" anymore is starting to get to her.. And its a vicious cycle because she is bad, so it seems like all we do it scold her instead of just loving on her.. and we are all definiltey annoyed.

I would be really upset about the christmas ornaments and the pump bag though..

  • I feel for you.  Morgan has been worse since Sophia arrived.  She never touched a soothie when ethan used them now she has eaten at least 4 of sophia's paci's.  She has always been a chewer and she will go weeks without chewing and then bam it's everything she can get her mouth on. it doesn't help that ethan just hands her everything to chew.

  • obviously he's not crate trained, which i'm a huge fan of (and our dogs love their crates).  but since you know he's getting into the ornaments, have you thought about putting up a gate so can't get to the tree or separating him somehow?

Sometimes dog do things like that when they're bored.  maybe he needs more exercise.  or maybe he's not getting the attention he used to get and he's jealous?

He is crate trained but we just haven't had regular issues like this for years and haven't needed it.

I understand that he might be bored now that he is in the house more but I really think that it is related to Greyson. We are going to get him more toys to keep his attention.

We already do a lot of dog proofing but no matter what we proof he will find something else to get into.

Screw the love and Up the exercise, haha!

One way dogs get out extra energy or anxiety is by chewing (or digging).  Abby had a hard time when dd started crawling.  She had a bad past and is fearful of many things, and this was a hard stage for her.  It was nicer weather out though then it is now, but I was able to up her exercise which helped to relieve her anxiety.  Not just walks, but unleashed full out running.  We did lots of frisbee and fetch in the back yard, even if it was just 5 minutes at a time.

Another thing you could do if you haven't already is to give appropriate chew toys.  Antlers, supervised rawhide, nylabones, busy buddy toy line.  We love the busy buddy toyline because it gives mental exercise as well as an outlet to chew.  Also for mental exercise - I made Abby follow me around a lot while I was doing my normal routine and do her tricks.  For example, I would have her do sit-stays, or roll over while I do the dishes.

A tired dog is a good dog!
