Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Little boys grabbing themselves

J was doing this the other day in the bathtub.  He was grabbing himself so hard that his face was turning red, it kind of looked like he was hurting himself.  I didn't want to laugh, or tell him no, so I just handed him a toy, and he happily played with that instead.

You ladies that have LO's slightly older than mine... what do you do?  Just let them go ahead unless it is an inappopriate time/place?  I feel like a voyeur sitting there with him while he is doing that which is why I handed him a toy.  I am also assuming he would stop if he were hurting himself so there is no need for me to jump in.

Any guidance would be appreciated.  I know this is a silly question.  But TIA!

  • I don't think this is just a boy problem b/c Bug "scratches" herself in the tub.  She leaves marks sometimes.  I try to distract her, but it's just something she's going to do.  I think it's perfectly normal; she's discovering herself.

PS: I wasn't judging you yesterday.  The undie story just reminded me of something my DH would do on a daily basis.

Haha I know.  I am perfectly confident and comfortable with my level of cleanliness and personal hygeine.

  • Mine isn't much older than yours, but we sort of laugh and acknowledge it and tell him to be careful with his penis!

I think when he does it out in public or something, we'll have to explain that that isn't appropriate, but for now, we don't do much about it.

  • My son seems to be fascinated with his butt in the tub. I'm not sure why, but I just try to give him other toys to play with. It's weird!

The whole inside out deal totally reminded me of a time when we were in college.  I went over to his apartment to do my laundry & asked if he had anything to throw in (I knew for a fact he had dirty clothes).  He informed me he just flipped his boxers inside out to get another day of wear out of them.  I puked in my mouth a little.  Needless to say, this is something we quickly changed when we got married.

And I wear my cotton panties inside out all the time.  I don't realize it until I'm already at school.  I feel weird taking my panties off (even to flip them) in an elementary school!

  • Mason pulls on it so hard sometimes I feel like he is going to rip it right off, but he touches himself quite frequently. He is perfectly content to put one hand down his pants for an entire day and not use it. We normally just pull his hand out and distract him, but even at night he has his hand down his diaper. I thought maybe something was bothering it, but  no rash or infection.

I didnt think he would start this for another 12 years, at least.

  • Anytime LOs Diaper is off his playing with it, I just chuckle and tell him it's not going anywere and it will ALWAYS be there. he just smiles and continues to grab. We do try and distract him with other things he can hold in his hand, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I try not to stress about it. I'm pretty sure it's just normal development.

  • DS is quite fascinated with his when he remembers its there haha.  I just let him do whatever, and tell him "thats your penis"....you know, part of learning his parts haha.  Sometimes he will pull on it, sometimes hes pushing it back in LOL..whatever, its his and I too hope that if it hurts him he wouldnt do it LOL...but I dont make it out to be a  bad thing and I dont think of myself as a voyer watching him, hes  just exploring and someone has to sit there and watch him in the tub, ya know! • I think the distracting is good.  P grabs himself mostly when I change him, and then he looks surprised like "what the heck is that thing??"

  • DS really likes playing with his penis ... in the same way that he loves poking his fingers in his belly button, sticking his finger in his nose, and playing with his toes :)

Right now they are at a stage of discovery - learning all the parts they have.  I agree it is a bit odd to watch - and I often cringe thinking he must be hurting himself, but at this point, it is all normal.

  • Bryce does the exact same thing in the tub. But instead of grabbing at his penis, he pokes the tip of it inward, like it's inverted. It appears to be painful, but he doesn't act like it hurts him. We do just what you did.. hand him a toy and distract him. I agree with you, I don't want to tell him "no," because it's not necessarily a bad thing. :)
