I just flew alone with LO. I bought new toys for her. So she had something new and exciting to play with. I heard the small bubble are good (although I didn't bring any) I was lucky and she slept most of the way.
Lots of snacks and non-toys (old cell phone, spoon to chew on, etc..) do the trick for us Also, crayons and paper, lift-the-flap books, sippy cup for take-off/landing...
We're flying tomorrow night. First time for DD2, and I'm starting to get nervous because take-off is right at her bedtime! I'm just praying she sleeps!!!!!!!
For DD1, we're packing the portable DVD player, some snacks, stamps and a notepad, her favorite book, and her sippy cup. I'm amazed at how NOT anxious I am about her flying at this age...that might bite me in the butt tomorrow night

We are flying on a 4.5 hour red eye tomorrow night to Atlanta. I am going to move us to the bulk head and pray he sleeps.
I booked these tickets in July prior to a different flight to Hawaii. We found out on that trip that buddy doesn't sleep on planes, fruck shieet piiiissss.
If you are flying during the day I suggest getting some new toys, quiet ones. Although the noisy ones I did get on the last flight no one could hear due to the regular plane noise. Movies if your LO will watch them. We also did a lot of walking up and down the isle. There were also other LO's on the flight so we "visited" with them too.
The one thing I wish I had on the last flight was my sling. The 10 minutes my LO did sleep 15 different times on the almost 6 hour flight began to make my back hurt from holding him.
We flew 7 hours with DS in October and it wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be. I was a little terrified, because he is so active. We loaded his favorite shows on the iPhone and had lots of snacks. I didn't really bother much with toys, because they only occupy DS for a few minutes.
The thing that saved me w/a 17 month old was my carrier (Beco Butterfly, much like an Ergo). I can't imagine not having some way to contain the kiddo. It was our last attempt at flying without buying her a seat, though. I decided that once they can walk, they're getting a seat and the carseat is coming on board.
Check out my blog "growing up AARP" (link in Sig). in Nov my DS & I flow to CA (with a lay over). He did have his own seat but I found a lot of thing helpful.
Good luck & just don't stress out to much if he fusses on board as long as you are trying to calm him down people will understand.
Let me add I learned this a long time ago after an eventful flight with my now 11 year old. Bring an extra set of clothes for yourself and anyone else in your group aside from the baby.
We were afraid DS would be a terror on his first flight, but it was actually okay. He sat on my lap the entire time, we brought new toys from the $5 section at Wal-Mart so that he'd be distracted, we brought a portable DVD player, let him play with my I-pod, etc. We also brought LOTS of drinks and snacks (fruit leather, gummies, cheezits, puffs, veggie chips, cheerios, water, juice, etc). DS doesn't take a bottle, so I made sure to BF him when we were landing and taking off so that his ears wouldn't pop. If your LO takes a bottle or paci, I'd bring that.
Ummm. . .honestly, on the flight there DS slept the entire time and woke up when we were landing. I was shocked. On the way back he didn't fall asleep until we were descending, but we were still able to entertain him and keep him quiet for the most part.
We just took a 5 1/2 hour flight and it went great! We had a really early flight so she was tired and slept on me for 3 hours. Once she woke up we fed her breakfast so that kept her occupied for awhile and then we had a bag of toys and books and just kept switching them out. She was great and didn't cry once.
