over-ordering med a common practice?

Hi ladies,

At my initial consult in Aug, I was not told how much med will be ordered. The plan was to try 2 IUIs. Tried IUI in Sep and Oct. Nov I had a Lap.

Now, I have come across this issue that the doctor's office has over ordered medicines in advance. The meds were for 2 IUIs (Folistim) , I think 1 IVF, post preg med, another med (Repronex) to combine with IUI/IVF standard med. But I have only used the meds for 2 IUIs (Folistim).
All the meds cost half of my insurance fertility pool. Now, I have too much medicine but not enough fund left to do 2 procedures. I feel they have made a big mistake, I have so much med but as there is not enough fund left now I have to jump to IVF and my fund will be gone.

Has anyone experienced this?
Isn't it that they need to order meds based on body's response? so how would they order in advance?
Is it a common practice to over order fertility meds?

Thanks for your help and have a wonderful Holiday season!

Re: over-ordering med a common practice?

  • My RE never ordered more meds than I needed and would more often then not order a little under average so that I wouldn't end up with extra.  Their thought was we could always get more, but we couldn't return any extra meds.  We were 100% OOP so no one wanted us to pay more than we needed.

ETA: I asked about this once when I did have a little med coverage thinking maybe I could get some of the meds covered before my insurance changed, but my doc said the insurance wouldn't approve more meds than they deemed necessary for a cycle without prior auth and submitted documentation showing I needed it.  At one point my insurance refused to pay for estradiol 2x day because they felt 1x day was enough.

  • I have no idea if it's common to over order meds, but I know that my previous RE's nurse over ordered my IVF meds.  When I asked her if I could order half of it to start with, (just incase we had to cancel) she was a total be-otch about it.   My pharmacy was great about overnighting my meds so I really have no idea what the problem was.  I ended up with $2300 of unused meds that cycle.  Fortunately, well... acutally unfortunately, I am cycling again soon and I am able to use most of the leftover meds with my upcoming IVF cycle.   I am also a little wiser this go around and I won't have a nurse dictate how I spend my money.

  • I think it is a little different if you are OOP or have insurance coverage. I am 100% OOP and we didn't order a vial, pill, or anything over what we needed.  I hope it works out for you!
