Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When did your LO start holding his/her own bottle?

DS is 5 months and isn't holding his yet.  He was born at 36w and seems to be a month behind for things, but still.  He sometimes holds my fingers that are holding the bottle and will use them to push the bottle out and pull it back in, but he still doesn't have interest in holding it himself.

Re: When did your LO start holding his/her own bottle?

  • I think my son would maybe be holding his already, if I let him.  He always tried to grab it, but ended up knocking it out of his mouth and getting mad, so I gave him a finger from each hand to hold on to.  Since I've always done that, he doesn't even really reach for the bottle - he just reaches for my fingers.  It's really quite adorable, but I should probably start having him practice holding it or he'll be 10 years old, holding onto my fingers while I give him a glass of water. Indifferent

  • My LO was born at 37 weeks and isn't holding her own either. She DOES try though. She can reach for it and gets get it with one hand and when she brings the other hand up she fumbles.... oh well. She is mostly EBF (DH gives her a bottle of BM a few times a week) so she doens't have ample time to practice I guess. She DOES try to hold my boob like a bottle when she is eating though! It's the funniest thing. Never in my life would I have thought my body would be handled like so..... wouldn't have it any other way.

  • Chloe started around 2 months if we put it in her mouth for spurts of about a min(which we couldn't believe), but it wasn't until recently she could pick it up, and put it in her mouth on her own and hold it up to drink it. However, she refused to roll over until 5 months. Babies work on different things at different points. I wouldn't worry. Lo will do it when ready! :)

  • DS can hold his now (in about 30 second to a minute intervals) but it's still rather unsteady. He's kind of lazy alot of times and doesn't really want to do it but when he does he still jerks around alot so I am definitely ready to keep it steady.

DS does this every time he eats.

  • DS started about 2 or 3wks ago, but like others isn't ready to do so for an entire feeding, and doesn't do it every time. I think daycare partly helps/encourages him a bit with this.
