weaning from bottle?

I think Jack could care less if I sent his milk in a bottle or sippy, should I start sending sippys (with breast milk) on a regular basis?

I just realized he's the next to move up out of the infant room.  The child that just moved in the past couple of weeks still visits the infant room for bottles. It made me think that if Jack doesn't care that much for bottles anyways (they are not a comfort device at all) maybe he could start a bottle to sippy transition now so there is less new things to get used to when he moves up.  Hmmm.

I sent in one milk sippy today for them use as a replacement for his morning (pre-lunch) bottle in addition to the water sippy he gets with lunch and snack.  We'll see how that goes.

Re: weaning from bottle?

  • I did that when he was about 11 months.  I replaced one at a time - I think I started with his morning bottle.  His night one was the last to go.  By about 12 months or a couple weeks after we got rid of the night one.  He isn't in day care, but its' kinda nice to be bottle free!

  • We actually switched to sippy's really early, like 6-8 months or something because Bella was never a real fan of the bottles. We switched to a sippy with a straw around 10 months because she LOVES straws and wasn't drinking much milk and the dr wanted us to "up" her milk consumption and I wasn't sure how to do it. Once we switched she started taking WAY more milk which was good for us. I think if he doesn't care, I would try it but send a bottle just in case!
  • If he's fine w/ it, I'd probably stop sending them.  Maybe send an empty bottle just as a backup?

  • I've actually been wondering the same thing lately. I know my dudes are only 8 months old, but they're WAY more into the sippy cups than bottles these days. I'm going to try to hold off for a while longer, but in your case I'd say go for it.
  • thanks.  I know we are not intersted in weaning from breastfeeding but I kind of had a "duh" moment when I started thinking about bottles.  He never has them at home so I never really thought about until they told me the 1 year old was back in the infant room so he could have his before nap bottle (which seems to be his personal security thing).

Jack started out with straw cups but recently started using sippy cups regularly too.  He's not picky so I think this should be pretty easy, but who knows.

  • I think that if he doesn't relate bottles to comfort, then why not? How did it go today? If he's willing to take your BM in a sippy, then go for it! Most pedis recommend that ALL babies be weaned from a bottle at one year, so he'll just be ahead of the game!
  • she always hated the bottle so it wasn't hard for us...we switched to straw cups around 8 months and she used them for about 2-3 weeks and then went straight to the cup (just started not wanting to take the straw cup) and has never used the sippy (it's not recommended by dentists anyway).  if we're out and want something portable i can use the straw no spill cup but that's pretty rare since i am still BFing her.
