Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Help, very confused :(

On Saturday I was due for my period and I didn't have it yet so I had a feeling I was pregnant because I know my body very well. I tested and the digital said pregnant, and the First response had a very faint second line. I was nervous with the faint line so I re tested the next day and the line was stronger and the digital said pregnant. On Monday I started to spot very light pink and I called my Dr. and he wasn't alarmed just yet. Through the evening it progressed and turned heavier with bleeding and cramping. I tested on Tuesday and I had negative pregnancy tests. The Dr. had my bloodwork done to test for Hcg and I had no more Hcg in my system. He was just as confused as I was and said I probably caught my pregnancy very early. I am so confused, hurt and sad. We were so excited because we have been trying for a few months.Has this ever happened to anyone?  Thank you SO much for any help or advice.

Re: Help, very confused :(

  • It's a pretty fast rollercoaster ride. It sounds like you had a chemical pregnancy, which is when a sperm and an egg did fertilize but did not not implant. Your body had enough HCG when you did the original test but slowly after you miscarried. I am so, so sorry that you experienced the joy only to have a loss shortly thereafter.

This happened to me though I was pregnant for two weeks after my positive test. My hcg levels were very low and rose slowly but never doubled. They did an u/s and found no sac so they dubbed it a chemical pregnancy.

You might want to ask your doctor whether he thinks you're okay to try again right away or if you should wait a cycle. My doc said to wait a cycle to prep my uterus lining. Best of luck and big hugs. A loss, is a loss.

  • What you are experiencing is very very common.  This happens to many women who don't even know that they're pregnant - they think it's just a late period and then when their period starts a few days later, they dismiss it and move on as normal, so even the statistics on how often this happens are off because many women don't even realize they've been through it.

There are many things that can cause this, improper implantation (a scar or cyst in the uterus in the way), chromosomal issues is a major cause - this can also be better explained by the doctor but essentially the embryo takes chromosomal information from sperm and egg and if something is missing or didn't cross over properly it will end the pregnancy -- you could have a blood clotting disorder that interferes (meaning you'd probably have to go on baby asprins to keep your blood thin through pregnancy) you could have low progesterone... so many number of things can go wrong (it really does make you appreciate what a miracle it is to get pregnant and carry a baby through birth).

But I will tell you to not beat yourself up. I tell everyone, do not feel defective (I did that to myself time and again and it's so not true), something just didn't work out right and so many women who go through this find the next attempt they carry a happy healthy baby to full term.  It's sad to say, and I'm sure not really an answer for you, but.... It just happens... I know it sucks... I know that's not the answer you want... But just because you had a miscarriage this time, does NOT mean you are more prone to have one again.  No two pregnancies are alike... As I once saw someone say, no two pregnancies are alike and there is no reason for me to think that my next one will be anything like the first..."

I'm babbling on now, there are so many things I'd like to say to help you feel better, I just don't know what words will take away the pain of what you're going through.  All I can say is take care of yourself and if you need someone to talk to, talk away!!!!

  • Same thing happened to me a week and a half ago... + on the digital and regular tests, then - a few days later, then I got my period :(  If I hadn't known my body and my cycles, and when to test, I wouldn't have thought anything of it and would have just chalked it up to my period being a little late.  All in all, I would rather have known than not though.  It just sucks :(

  • I am so thankful for your responses. I am so very sorry for the loss everyone here has been through. Even though it was such a short amount of time of having a positive test we were so excited and thankful. It almost feels like a cruel joke to have a positive test and then it turns negative. My heart feels empty and I pray that it will be filled again soon. I pray so for everyone here also. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me to understand what went on with all of my confusion.
